Scholarships?

What state are you from?

What major?

I’m from North Carolina, my current major is Criminal Justice but i;m planning on double majoring with Psychology too.

I guess I only applied for Schols and admission then. I applied for the Crimson scholarship because you told me about it :)

Mybama doesn’t show anything like you mentioned. I guess I haven’t gotten in yet???

Tilgaham…

when you logged onto MyBama, did you go to the Academics tab on top?

Then, in the left column, about halfway down, do you see anything like below

elhx…

Since you’ve applied for scholarships with a major within the College of Arts and Sciences, you could have a chance for another scholarship. A&S has some of their own scholarships that they award.

What are your stats?

D just emailed about scholarships. Here is her reply…

The scholarship review committees are in the process of reviewing the 12,000 applications we received this year. Scholarship confirmation letters will be mailed in mid-March of this year. Your application is now in the hands of your college (based on the major you have selected) and the National Alumni Association. If you receive scholarship funds through UA, then these scholarships will be listed on this letter. You will be asked to accept or confirm the scholarship at that time.

Carolyn Rogers

Director of Scholarships

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

The University of Alabama

She said that applied even to the top scholars programs.

When did your D apply for scholarships?

When did your D get accepted?

What scholarship is she going to get (based on stats)?

Did the email seem like a “form email”?

That email seems odd. Everyone else is getting their scholarships within a few weeks of acceptance. hmmmmmm

The words “scholarship confirmation letters” seem odd to me. That doesn’t sound like scholarship award letters. That sounds like the letter you get in the spring asking you to accept or decline by a certain date.

^^^I’m betting the e-mail is not referring to the award letters. The confirmation letters will have all scholarships the student can receive from UA listed because the student has to confirm that they will be taking advantage of the scholarship(s).

^^^

That’s what I’m thinking, too.

Critter, what did your daughter ask the Scholarships office?

Did she ask when she’d be hearing about her award? Or did she ask something in a way that Mrs. Rogers may have misunderstood?

She said that she applied in October and was accepted by the 1st of November and immediately got her scholarship application in but has yet to hear about scholarships. She was wondering when that would happen. (She especially wondered when I told her what I had been reading here!)

She specifically asked how long it would take to be notified about scholarships, and when she got the answer, above she emailed back and asked specifically about the process for the top scholars awards as she is a National Hispanic Scholar. (She was told it was the same…mid-March notification.)

She would easily be a presidential scholar if she did not qualify for the other, but I know they have her marked down as NHP on her info their site, so I don’t know what to think. She has also filled out an application for the Fellows program as well as CBH and Intl and regular honors. She received an invite for Capstone Day but was disappointed to be unable to attend. We live on the west coast and cost is an issue.

Also the letter says ‘if you receive scholarship funds…’? I thought those scholarships were automatic?

D already has been accepted to in-state school with a scholarship and has had quite a bit of interest shown by other (many highly ranked) schools. We have 5 kids…she is the middle child. We have some experience with the process. I guess you could say she is ‘interesting’ beyond her numbers, which are good and the hispanic thing doesn’t hurt.

She really likes Alabama and now that applications are all in she is trying to sort through her options in her mind. She thought she would be able to afford Alabama but if the scholarship is not a sure thing, that will be a different story. We have a lowish EFC. That reply has definitely thrown her! Thanks for the input.

if the emails have left her or you confused, just give them a call. sometimes speaking to someone can answer the questions quickly

I would call this morning. Offices are open til noon CST. 1-800-933-bama (press 5 for scholarships)

The other NH kids that I know have already gotten their awards.

**She will surely get her award, since she qualifies. ** I don’t know of anyone else that got that email.

That email sounds like a form letter.

If you PM your D’s name to me, I can try to work it from here.

Another option…contact your area rep and have them find out what is going on. http://gobama.ua.edu/staff/

Had a thought…did your D get a letter from Alabama inviting her to apply because she is a NH? If so, Bama probably thinks that is her notification.

When my son was NMF, we didn’t get any NM award either until spring, just the invite to apply in the fall.

However, we did get the Presidential notice in the fall, which is why this is sooooo odd.

I would definitely want to talk to a live person or talk to your area rep.

I know this is a stupid question…but is your D absolutely sure that the scholarship app got submitted? Is there are way to check that?

I talked to Bama this morning…

Please look at your D’s email to the Scholarship office. Does she specifically mention the date she applied to the school, the date she applied for scholarships, and the fact that she’s NH?

The reason I ask is this. Bama has been getting some late apps, and those people are being told that they will be notified in the spring if they are to be awarded a scholarship. Perhaps, the office misunderstood and thought your D was a late application.

Can anyone give me some more information on additional scholarships? We are Virginia residents and my son has his heart set on UA. I was born in B’ham and most of my extended family lives in Alabama. He has been accepted and has been offered the collegiate scholarship which as everyone knows is $3500 a year. Will not go far on the costs of out of state tuition. My older son is applying to law schools also, so we really need as much help as possible!!! My son will be in the college of arts and sciences. He has applied to the honors college as well as UFE. He is tied for 3rd in his high school class with a 4.4 GPA and had a 1270 SAT. Any advice would be appreciated!!!

D just sent an email to Lindsay Jordan. Thanks for the idea. She had contact with her once already when she was filling out her application, but didn’t realize that was her actual area rep until she looked it up today.

It’s too late now back in Alabama for her to call so I will try to have her squeeze it in early Monday AM.

She did say in her emails that she applied in Oct and did the rest in November. I had her check her mybama site under academics. They show her applications in for everything, with the general app on Oct 20, Scholarship app on Nov 1. (That is also when she got her acceptance.) It also shows her deposit payed on Nov 16, and the honors/Fellows applications complete. (They were also in early.) I’m not sure how they could think she was a late app, but I know they are getting tons of applications and things do get missed. That’s why we are following up!

She should easily have qualified for the Presidential as well. Hmm…and no, she learned about Alabama at least as early as last year from you kind folks. The more she looked into it, the more she thought it would be a good option for her. She has always liked the south and is big on academics along with school spirit and a strong sense of community. She got really excited when she thought it might actually be a financial possibility for her!

And yes, she mentioned the NHS thing in the email and it is noted on mybama, as well.

Again, thanks everyone, especially mom2collegekids. I’ll let you know what we find out Monday…if I can get her moving early. She already has to get up at 5:30 am every school day. Wait, she leaves here by 6:15. I wonder if the office is even open that early back there? By the time she gets home I know it will be closed. I’ll have to look into it further, I guess.

Thanks again!

^^^^

There is nothing wrong with you calling if that’s possible. They understand that seniors are in school during the day. Just have your D’s CWID info.

I would ask to speak to Carolyn Rogers, if possible.

If that won’t work, call Honors College and ask if they can help. Call Jami Gates. She might also be able to find out what’s what with your D’s scholarship. I believe that she is in charge of recruiting NM and NH students. Her number is: 205-348-5599

Your D will definitely get the big NH scholarship. She met the deadline, she has the stats, so it’s a given.

*Additional scholarships?

Can anyone give me some more information on additional scholarships? We are Virginia residents and my son has his heart set on UA.
The Arts and Sciences also has scholarships, as well as the individual departments. What did your son put as his major?

With his 4.4 GPA and his 1270/1600 SAT (about an ACT 28), he should be a good candidate for one of those scholarships, since they give them to kids who don’t get the BIG scholarships. :)

Also, I would contact the Honors College to find out if they might be a source for scholarships or perhaps a campus job to help pay costs.

Lastly, the COA for OOS at Bama is about $31k. However, that price includes personal expenses and the super-suites type housing. Typical dorms (doubles) are about $2500 less.

Well, I said I would let you all know what I found out on Monday and here it is Friday night…and I still don’t have any answers. D did not get a response to her email from her regional rep and she/we have had a crazy week around here. She did call a few times. Believe it or not, twice she kept getting a busy signal. This morning she got through during office hours but got a machine and on the third try she left a very detailed message (I was there…dates, numbers, all specifics, everything) with the scholarship office. Here’s the reply of the day!

"You had called and left a message about wanting to receive information on scholarships.

If you are applying as an incoming freshman for fall 2010, then:

Generally we start reviewing students with an ACT of 24 or higher (or SAT of 1090 or higher) and cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for scholarship consideration. These are generally college scholarships and Alumni Scholarships. The scholarships listed on the website under Types of Scholarships have different test score and GPA requirements.

Note: For the ACT test, the writing component is not considered for scholarships. For the SAT test, the critical reading and mathematics scores are the only components considered.

You had to meet our December 1st scholarship deadline to be considered. This means all documents (admission application and fee, scholarship application, official high school transcript and official test scores (either ACT or SAT)) had to be postmark December 1, 2009. If you were admitted by this deadline, then you will be considered for all scholarships which you meet eligibility for, including those offered through the college with your major and the Alumni office.

If you are applying as a transfer student for fall 2010, then in order to be considered for scholarships you have to do the following:

Apply by March 1st

Coming from a 2-year college with a 3.5 or higher GPA

Have completed at least 2 years at the community college (which is about 60 hours)

Complete an admissions application and fee, submit a scholarship application and official college transcript by the deadline to be admitted

All I can say is, wow! This would be almost funny, instead of frustrating if not for one thing. My daughter is getting a bad taste in her mouth at this point. She was so happy to be done with the whole application process and thought no matter what she could be happy at Alabama and afford to go there but now she is nervous. She worries a lot about family finances. She even said today she probably should apply to another school that sent her a scholarship offer and will probably do so this weekend. She doesn’t think she can wait until March to get an answer when it may be too late for other opportunities.

I really don’t know what to say to her at this point. It is very hard when she has gotten so much attention elsewhere, but I hate for her to give up on Alabama. She is wondering if they are just not interested in her for some reason, but she is not only NHS, she has very high SATs and, well, everywhere else they say she is a stellar candidate with some very strong hooks.

I guess I will have her try to call honors next week.

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions.

I apologize that UA sent what is obviously a prerecorded message that had nothing to do with the question when your daughter specifically described her situation. Since she met all the deadlines, I am sure that she received the NHRP scholarship. Do keep calling and don’t let this dissuade your D from choosing UA. Once you start talking with the academic departments and such, scheduling appointments is a lot easier and questions are answered quickly. The scholarship office is just really busy right now.
