Scholarships

How generous is UF with scholarships. All of the other schools I've applied to give scholarships with the admissions letter. When does UF give out info about scholars?

They are pretty generous, and if you are first college generation they will pay you part of the tuition.

UF has no OOS scholarship programs.

Since the student body is nearly 97% in-state, and most students qualify for the Bright Futures Scholarship program, which covers 75% to 100% of tuition funded by the Florida lottery, UF has never needed merit based scholarships to entice top students.

Basically, don’t expect any merit aid, try for need-based if necessary.

Yeah, they aren’t really very generous at all, even for National Merit/Achievement/Hispanic scholars. You save a lot of money by going to UF anyway (even if you don’t have Bright Futures).

Does anyone know of a way to get oos tuition waiver if not nmf?

There’s something about the top 50 getting a $3,000 waiver I think.

I saw that…I was hoping there could be another way to get a full oos waiver. I can’t afford to go to UF if I don’t… especially with other scholarship offers on the table

I’m sorry, I don’t think there’s anything else merit-based and I don’t know anything about the need based aid. Good luck, I hope you find something.

Not very generous at all, actually.

Enough people want to go to UF simply because it’s UF that the university doesn’t have to offer scholarships to entice people to come.

True, but even with the cuts to NMF, they still offer OOS essentially a full-tuition scholarship. If I didn’t have it, I probably wouldn’t attend, so I feel pretty grateful about their generosity.

What’s ridiculous is that they reportedly offer National Achievement Finalists twice as much as NMF. I’m going to call Monday and find out if NMF can get that also.

thanks anyway. i guess i’ll end up at southern cal if uf doesn’t work out

That’s a load of crap. What I do know is that they offer OOS NMF,NAF,etc. way more than they do ISS.

No, it isn’t.

"Good afternoon, and congratulations on your accomplishments! If you do choose to attend the University, you will be offered two different scholarships.

From the Honors Program, you will be awarded a $17,000 scholarship disbursed as $2000 per semester, as well as an additional $1000 that may be used for research.

From the Office of Admisisons, you will be awarded another scholarship worth a cumulative $17,000 (disbursed as $2125 per semester).

Also, you will be awarded a tuition reduction waiver for the non-resident portion of your tuition. You will be responsible for in-state tuition, which, currently, is about $4200. You will also be invited to participate in the Honors Program. Should you choose this option, you can reside in Hume Hall (the honors residence hall), and receive priority registration.

All of these scholarships may be stacked on top of any other scholarships you may receive.

I hope you have a wonderful week! If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know. "

Maybe you shouldn’t spout off when you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Well I’m a National Achievement Finalist and I got the same little brochure as the only National Merit Finalist did at my school… It included everything together and specifically said National Merit, Achievement, and Hispanic scholars.

That guy is an OOS, and like I said, OOS students get much more than ISS… I’m in-state and wasn’t offered anything like that. It’s just the same $5000 ($1k for research, $500 each semester). I assure you I don’t “spout off” about things without good reason… I like how you’re trying to tell me I’m wrong when all you’ve got to go off of is some random person’s post about an email they claim to have received. My brother was a National Merit Finalist (he’s half-black, but didn’t mark AA as his ethnicity on the PSAT) and he receives the same thing that I’m being offered as a NAF.

Does UF offer any awards for National Hispanic Scholars?

In-state, by the way.

^ yes. It’s the same amount: $1k for research, and $500 each semester for a total of $5000.

If you carry any of the Florida PrePaid College programs you are aotumatically in-state tuition, doesn’t matter where you live.

I’m not trying to tell you you’re wrong. You are wrong.

If you’d actually bothered to read my post, you’d have seen I was referring to OOS to begin with, seeing as how I’m not in-state. I’m not arguing that you personally will be receiving twice as much, your situation has nothing to do with mine.

Rebecca Johnson, the coordinator for incoming NMF, NAF etc., is the one who wrote they email you seem to think was made up. You can email her yourself if you want. Given that OOS NAF receive two $17,000 scholarships, whereas I (an OOS NMF) will only receive one, I’m not sure what your problem with my original statement is. They are getting twice as much.

Now you’re just drawing at straws. Nowhere did you mention that you were referring to OOS students. You just said that NAF gets twice as much as NMF, which isn’t true. You’re calling me wrong with a baseless assumption. The amount is the same for NAF, NMF, etc. for ISS, and NAF, NMF, etc. for OSS.

I can post something saying that I’m getting $25,000 from FSU (which isn’t true; I get $24,000) and throw in some random person’s name. Would you then believe that it’s true simply because of what I claimed to have read in an email?

"I’m going to call Monday and find out if NMF can get that also. "

I think that’s a good idea.

No where? “True, but even with the cuts to NMF, they still offer OOS essentially a full-tuition scholarship. If I didn’t have it, I probably wouldn’t attend, so I feel pretty grateful about their generosity.” I’m sorry you interpreted my statement as some sort of blanket treatise on all their policies. I freely admit I have no idea what their ISS scholarships are; I was referring only to my own situation and I apologize if I was too vague.

I didn’t give you her name because I thought you fall over in amazement, I gave it so you can email her yourself. Go ahead and ask her, she responds extremely quickly and is super nice: rsjohnson@admissions.ufl.edu.

Edit: Ha, thanks for editing out that I’m “e-raging.” I’m not sure why you think this has got me enraged. You seem like a nice enough guy, I’m just a little annoyed at your continued condescension and suggestions that I’m lying.
