My daughter will be attending college in the fall and majoring in theater. She has been accepted into four schools - two of which have offered her scholarships, but of course, they are not where she would like to go to school. Interestingly enough, the two that she doesn't want to attend are great schools but she is in love with the program, facilities, etc. of the school she has chosen.

My question is, is there a way to get some money out of her chosen school for scholarships or does she just need to consider the cost implication and possibly go the school NOT of her choosing just because she can get a substantial amount of money?

I should mention that her SAT well exceeds the requirements as does her GPA. Does that make a difference?

We are meeting with the theater department, visiting classes and meeting with financial aid on Tuesday. If anyone has any great advice - please send it my way. I'm new at this and want to handle it the right way from the get go.

Thanks!

There’s no harm in telling the school that it’s the program your D really wants to attend, but that finances are a problem. You can mention the scholarships at the other schools, but if they are merit based or if they are FA from less selective schools, it may not help.

I’m not sure what you mean by this, is there a merit scholarship that has set gpa & SAT requirements that she didn’t receive? If so, it could be important, but if the gpa and SAT are just guidelines for who’s ‘in the running’ for merit aid, it’s unlikely to help.

Again, just approach them with genuine concern and the worst they can say is no, and you’ll know that you tried everything possible.

You should call admissions and share that your daughter would really like to attend the school, but has been offered merit aid at other schools and would like to know if she can expect any merit aid from them. If the school has the financial resources and your daughter is one they really would like to have enrolled at their school, they may cough off some money. Good luck.
