Scholarships

Does anyone know of any scholarships for undergraduate students that are not associated with schools? I will be a college freshman this year, and I'm hoping to find some money to decrease my tuition in the future.

Thanks!

Sadly, it’s hard for current college students to get outside scholarships.

You might look at your own school for dept scholarships for your major.

Is your school unaffordable? If so, you may need to consider some other choices…such as:

1) going to a CC for 2 years and then transferring

2) taking a gap year and applying to other schools that will be affordable because of lower cost or merit scholarships.

I hate to see posts like yours because it makes me wonder if now that the money is due, the family is seeing that the school may not be affordable for future years. I’m hoping that your family can afford your school, but you’re just looking to reduce some costs.

thanks,

The latter is true. My parents can afford to pay for my UG education, I just don’t like having to rely on them and see all of there hard earned money go toward my education. I know they wouldn’t have it any other way though because they value education so highly.

anyone else have any ideas?

What are you majoring in? There are some scholarships out there for specific fields. There are also some scholarships out there for minorities.

My kids work summers and part-time during the school year. They pay a chunk of tuition out of their summer earnings, and earn all there own money for personal expenses during the school year. I’m sure if your parents saw you working to pay a reasonable share of your expenses they would be very proud of you, and appreciate your willingness to help defray costs. Applying to any available scholarships is also very good, but not as reliable as working when you can.

Investigate RA opportunities. Part-time jobs on campus. Tutoring athletes.

Summer jobs, part time work during the schl yr, and maybe a dept scholarship can help reduce your parents costs.
