Do you get notified when you receive your acceptance letter?

Can you get a scholarship without getting into honors?

If my memory is correct, you can receive small scholarships just by applying and getting accepted into the school. You don’t have to apply to get some scholarships. Is my memory correct?

When she received her acceptance, there was no confirmation of any scholarship awards at that time. I don't know yet know how a prospective student is notified of scholarship awards--maybe one of the current students or parents can address that...? If I'm not mistaken, there are several scholarships that do not require additional applications, so long as you admissions application is complete by December 1.

You definitely don't need to be in the Honors Program to be eligible for scholarships. For example, there are some merit scholarships specifically for students who qualify for the Scholars Program. There are also scholarships available for out-of-state students, and other scholarships for in-state students, whose class rank and/or test scores fall within certain parameters.

Your daughter still hasn't been notified of a scholarship, correct?

From your link, I wonder who gets these scholarships and when the students are notified.

National Buckeye scholarships for non-Ohio residents

Ohio State is committed to enrolling a diverse and talented student population. Two merit awards are available to qualified domestic students who are admitted to the Columbus campus for fall quarter and are required to pay the out-of-state surcharge.

Additional notes:

National Buckeye awards can be combined with any other merit scholarships, not to exceed the total value of an Ohio State education.
These awards are renewable for a maximum of 12 quarters of full-time enrollment, provided the recipient maintains a 2.5 or higher GPA from the second year forward and makes satisfactory academic progress, and nonresident classification remains unchanged.
National Buckeye Plus Scholarship

Criteria
This award is open to non-Ohio residents with an ACT composite score of 26+ or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1180+.

Criteria
This award is open to non-Ohio residents with an ACT composite score of 24?25 or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1090?1170.

No, she hasn't heard yet if she's going to receive any scholarships or not. Since this is our first go-around with college admissions, unfortunately, I don't know when the notification will be.

It's a thin envelope from the Office of First Year Experience.
It lists the scholarships (merit) that you got.

I got Provost (2,400/yr) if I accept the Honors invite and Keep a 3.2 GPA. I don't understand this because to stay in Honors, I have to have a 3.4. That high of a GPA freshman year was scaring me so I posted before about the Scholars program and thank everyone for their responses.

National Buckeye Plus was 6,600/yr if I keep a 2.5 GPA. The awards are combined.

The letter also puts on the pressure to commit to OSU by telling you that your housing is to be tied to when you agree to binding enrollment and pay the deposit.

I was accepted to OSU in October and the merit award letter came last week.

I'm going to Honors day in February to have a look.

ddomino88, thanks for the info. Congratulations on getting the scholarships. Wow. You waited 3 months. OSU needs to speed up its process. A scholarship may be the deciding factor in choosing a school.

Did you apply for any scholarships or did you just apply to OSU?

For students named Maximus scholars and invited to the Maximus competition in February there was notification of the scholarship award ($2,700) in that letter. As far as the GPA differences, I asked that question and OSU staff said that scholarship eligibility requirements are separate from Honor's affiliation requirements and may differ.

I didn't apply for scholarships. There's an application form for the Morrill Scholarship that's for URM's but I think that's it. I was told that they use the essays and recs as a tiebreaker for possible honors invites from schools that don't rank.

I wasn't invited for the Maximus. The Provost is given to people offered Honors who aren't at Maximus contender level. The Buckeye and Buckeye Plus are entirely number (SAT/ACT) driven. I think I got the most that a non-URM, OOS applicant who's smart but not uber-smart. It helps take the sting off the OOS tuition for my parents.

Compared to other large state U's OSU is generous and realistic with it's merit aid for OOS applicants.

My son was also accepted in October...but to date we have received no letters outlining merit awards. When he was accepted, the regional rep "told" him that he qualified for the National Buckeye Plus Scholarship, but when I reviewed the literature, it appears my son also qualifies for an additional merit award.

We did receive a thin envelope last week, but it was only information pertaining to submitting the $100 enrollment deposit.

Anyone else experience the same? Any thoughts?

As some above posters said, not all of OSU's scholarships are associated with the Honors Program. However, a good deal of them go to Honors/Scholars and URM/diversity & OOS. Other, smaller scholarships are awarded based on more specific qualifications --those are the scholarships you may have seen on the application and individually "applied" for.

From personal experience and through the hearsay of friends, I can tell you that most of the Honors scholarships have (probably) been sent out. I recently received a letter for Provost, and someone I know has been given info. on Maximus. As OSU continues to get applicants eligible for Honors, their scholarships will also be sent out. My point is that the other scholarships OSU awards -- for diversity and OOS specifically -- have probably not been sent out yet, perhaps due to the sheer number of eligible students. Honors & Scholars has a whole house working to shovel these letters out; the other scholarships probably don't have the same attention (yet). So rsquare and others, no worries. Point in case: I received the Provost letter two weeks before the $100 deposit.

Told by Admiss. Office that he "should be recieving Buckeye Plus (1330/1600 and 3.6 GPA, but nothing recieved in writing yet.) I sure hope it comes through as it was a main component of the TOSU "expeience".

We are attending Scholars day this coming Saturday, 1/20/07.

Today, D received a letter confirming that she'll be receiving the National Buckeye Plus Scholarship and the Trustees Scholarship! Needless to say, she's thrilled, H and I are happy for her and now we're going to sit back and wait to hear from the Scholars Program. :)

To everyone who's awaiting word on the scholarships: Best of luck and I hope that you hear good news soon!
