Scholastic Art and Writing 2010

Is anyone else entering?

I'm submitting a novel and probably a short story... I only found out about this competition a couple of months ago. I just wish I had known about it before my senior year... oh well...

I’m working on a non fiction (personal) piece to submit.

I’m entering (junior here).

I’m submitting my poetry. I have a LOT of poetry and I’m just gonna submit them all. It’s hard to choose which one is the best lol.

nvm, i just saw it costs 5 bucks per submission :frowning: . I’ll probably pick one about my family and another one I just wrote that had a random topic like college admissions (lol), what we should be like, etc.

I’m planning to submit a general writing portfolio. Gunning for a scholarship, though of course it’s difficult to obtain.

^ If I recall correctly, most gold medalists and such didn’t send a lot of poems, since it’s probably better to have one or two “really good” poems than one or two “really good” poems and a slew of “just good” poems. The “just good” ones probably attenuate the awesomeness of the other ones.

I sent around five poems last year (and got a gold key, but didn’t place nationally), so I understand that it’s hard to choose which ones are the best. But if you get other people to read them and help, I’m sure it’ll be easier? Just my two cents. =]

Edit:

The poems all count as one submission, so it’s $5 for any number of poems as long as you’re within the line limit.

I wanted to put together a portfolio, but I don’t think I’d have enough quality writing to do well with it =/ And if I scrambled to write a bunch of well-composed stuff at the last minute, I’d feel like I was doing it just to throw my hat in the ring for the money…

I hate that they announce the novel winners so much later than the others… so much waiting… grrrr. But, at least this way, I’ll have more time to edit and revise and fine-tune.

Woot. I’m submitting! (Junior.)

I was one of the 12 regional gold keys in the novel category sophomore year. I only submitted like 15 pages (didn’t take it seriously) when you can submit 50, so I think that’s what killed me.

I want to submit in a bunch of the categories this year. If only I can focus. . .

Lol you juniors make me feel old. I remember when I was a junior. =( Back in June…

I’m a junior and entered a personal narrative. I didn’t have to pay though…our school took care of all the admission moolah.

Does the whole “early submission” thing matter at all? I’d rather have an extra month to work on it…

Rachael, mine’s probably going to end up around 25 pages or so - hopefully they won’t judge on length so long as it’s over the 15 page threshold. And unfortunately, I have to do region-at-large seeing as I’m in desolate west TX…

Freshman =)

Going to enter the novel, dramatic script, and poetry competitions… first year ^.^

For the people who wrote / are writing novels, how do you guys approach the format?

Is it 15 pages from the opening? Or do you write pages from various sections of your book?

Must the submissions be individual? My friend and I are working on an epic novel…

I’m entering for the first time (junior)…probably personal narrative, poetry, persuasive, and then short story.

Definitely not getting an award though :P

I know fairy_dreams asked this already, but I’d rather submit mine later and work some more, so does the early submission matter?

I’m region-at-large. Anyone else? XD

@watchmesoar: it says that for all categories,

“Collaborative works by more than one student are NOT eligible for The Scholastic Writing Awards.”

sorry :[

I’m at region at large too  I hear it’s harder though @.@

That is a good question. At first I thought the beginning, ya know? To get the back story and stuff. But after thinking about it, I’m not so sure…

^harder? awww. tsubomi fail.

I’m planning to enter. I’m gonna work on it over the holidays and such.

-Short story
-Short short story
-Novel

I’ll submit the first two on Jan. 8 though since I just found out about it and I don’t mind paying the extra ten bucks if I can work on it over the holidays.
