Hi. I’m new to this thread, but thought some of you might be able to answer my question. I was deferred from Brown ED and sent them an update letter a few weeks ago with info on some awards I had received since November and just a general I-want-to-go-to-Brown-more-than-anything-if-you-accept-me-I-will-come sort of thing (though hopefully a little less desperate sounding!). My teacher just told me that the art piece I submitted won a gold key, and I was just wondering if this is something I should tell the Brown Admissions committee in a short note. My teacher seems to be pretty excited about it, but reading through the thread I’m worried updating Brown about the gold key will come off as me grasping at straws. Does anyone have an opinion on this or any advice? Thanks so much!

Hey baubletree, congrats! Of course you should be excited about your art gold key, and Brown should be pleased to hear about it. But since you wrote them only a few weeks ago, perhaps the same message would come across as less desperate if delivered by a different messenger? How about asking your art teacher or, better yet, your guidance counselor to shoot Brown an email about your award? I’m years away from college apps, so this is just a random guess. Say hi to Emma Watson for us!

My daughter just got a mail to our home address - RAL Gold Key in General Writing Portfolio.
Thanks to all of you for listening the last couple of days.

Congrats, ld! You and your daughter should be very proud.

Quick question–My teacher was sent a package with something called Young Artist Awards and Young Scholars Application 2010. It says there that I ‘must’ be from a low income family to apply, but on the application form, there is a box where I can check that my family makes more than 40K a year. So should I apply or not–anybody with experience? Do you think there’s a chance that I’ll get picked, and since I’m Canadian, the odds really aren’t with me… Just hoping for some advice. Thanks :)

Hey AnW, if you look at p. 2 of the application, it’s very clear that you can’t qualify for Young Artist (grades 7-11) or Young Scholars (grade 7) unless your family makes less than $40K a year. The box on the first page of the application form is probably just a reminder for applicants to confirm that they are low income. If you check the “more than” box, I expect that your application will be tossed out immediately. If you are low income, I’d be shocked if your chances are lower just because you are Canadian. I’d gladly protest with you if that was the case :)

I just got a letter saying I won a regional Gold Key! I entered a personal essay/memoir and I’m in region-at-large. I mailed it in literally on the last day, so I am excited!

Congrats, delvedeeper! Glad you made it in time, lol.

My package arrived in the mail today! Not sure how relevant that is, but I figured you all might like to know. I’m in the southeast and I’m assuming it came from New York (I’m WRAL). Anyway, exciting! Now to cross my fingers and limbs until April…

Crossing the limbs, huh? Maybe Scholastic should have a new category, performance art, just for lacrimosa :)

i won a gold key for my general writing portfolio, wral. i was so shocked and excited… i only wish i’d actually tried on it now, because it would be a dream come true to win a national medal
but i dont think i showed enough variety, effort, and also used too many poems (5). praying for a miracle.

Good job, belle07, and good luck!

thanks
you too!

hey guys–
do you know if there are other awards on a lesser level (i.e. not national level) that you can still win? it seems like most people have been posting gold key awards, but are there smaller things like regional plaques, etc. that you can win? just wondering, b/c i haven’t gotten any notice from them yet and i remember reading a line that said entrants can still win regional awards… has that happened to anyone yet? and if so, when do those results usually come out?

thanks!!

hey fashionista. We enter Scholastic Art & Writing through 96 Regional Affiliates and, if you don’t live in any one of them, the Region-at-Large. Regional Affiliates recognize outstanding works with four regional awards: Gold Keys, American Visions & Voices Nominees, Silver Keys and Honorable Mention. The first two types are forwarded to New York City for national consideration. In addition, Regional Affilaites can award books, etc. The Region-at-Large only awards regional Gold Keys, which are also considered for national Gold or Silver Keys. As far as timing goes, I know that the Region-at-Large has notified everyone by the end of last week. If you are in a Regional Affiliate, you should check with them whether they have notified everyone. Good luck!

I just got three regional gold keys for WRAL! Short story, journalism, and short short story. Totally wasn’t expecting this, but I think it just made my year. :]

And I postmarked my work a week late, so if any of you guys have any issues with mailing things in in the future, don’t fret. Seriously. Lol.

Way to go, rachael! We’re good enough procrastinators without your encouragement, lol. Good luck in the national round.

Haha. Always glad to be of assistance.
And BUMP for hinderpanda.

I’ve entered a novel too. And like, a week before the deadline, my entire flash drive decided to just DIE on me. >_< That was such a fun experience.

Of the four pieces I submitted, I won a Gold Key (RAL) for the piece I thought least likely to win. Anyone have a similar experience?

Pretty much gave up hope… Then completely out of the blue received a package last Friday with my ARAL gold key in painting. I think I’m the first arts award here… But I’m not sure
