I’m submitting two journalism entries, a short story, and a short short story. And I’m submitting two novels by the March deadline. I figure the more crap I throw at them, the better chance I have at charming them. ;)

For novel writing,

Should all the chapters/pages you write be continuous from the start of your novel? Or can you choose to write chapters from random places in your novel?

i didn’t submit all of the fee. uh-oh. mixup.

Luminouzz – I have no idea. Probably just call them (they’re bad at responding to emails) and ask.

nil – what happened?

I’ve submitted a personal essay/memoir, and I literally mailed it on the 8th. Hopefully that is okay! But after reading over this thread, I realized that I did not include 2 copies of my piece in the envelope, only one. Could this take me out of the running? Also, anyone else in region-at-large enter a personal essay/memoir?

^I did a personal essay/memoir for region-at-large. It’s probably not that good though, it was sort of a spur of the moment thing.

I mailed mine out on the 8th too :]

The Program Timeline said regional awards should be announced by the end of February, and national adjudication should start in March. Some last year/previous years got notified in the middle of March, and one even called and said they were read alphabetically (I don’t know if this is still the case…). If anyone gets an award/notification, could they post what region they’re from, and what genre they submitted?

Since they don’t notify people that aren’t receiving an award, it might be good to have some closure…

delvedeeper, we didn’t need two copies of the piece, only the submission form.

Well then I’m set! My envelope should be en route as of now.
I completely entered this on a whim, but from what I hear Scholastic is pretty disorganized and we will probably not find out anything for a while. Still, crossing my fingers!

wow i m anxious to know even though its like only january

delvedeeper: sending it on the postmarked date SHOULD be fine. the coordinator told me last year (for RAL) it was perfectly fine after i e-mailed him so i don’t see why they would have changed it it this year.

ugh, did any of you guys send it from cali? i’m scared…i didn’t know we changed regional sponsors and i barely got to my e-mail until late to discover they MUST have it in by the postmarked date. *** ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. does anyone know if they’r egoing to be lenient? it was my last year : ( sorry to sound like a broken record but i will be so disappointed if they don tlook at it.

tsu: your teacher will get an e-mail about it …sometime in february? my teacher did the 26th and i actually received the packet in march. depends on the teacher if they’re going to tell you…you should ask him/her or he/she may opt to tell you about it.

gl guys…ahh i was so excited about my first gold key : ) who knows if i may even have the chance this year…

thanks wheatbread! I hope everything works out!!

if it’s any comfort to you, someone from my school told me that they submitted their work a week late last year and it was still considered :]

are we allowed to enter other competitions in the meantime?

thanks tsu : D

yes, you’re allowed to enter other competitions

as far as entering competitions with works you submitted to SA&W- from the packet i received last year:

“blah blah blah…during that time, you may continue to edit and rewrite your work, and may submit it to other programs, etc., that do not require exclusive publishing rights, such as for college applications”

I submitted an essay for the citizenship contest but neglected to send it to the citizenship award office. So the alliance might think i have insufficient funds.sigh.

I think you can still send it. Scholastic is soo disorganized.

^yes, and the disorganization seems to be getting increasingly worse with each passing year, lol.

^they didnt even pick a gold winner for the novel idk y

from last year? o.O

I’m entering this years (2010)

Yeah me too but when i checked to see who won no one did for the publishing deal with PUSH i hope they do this year though i entered for the novel

anyone who won in previous years (ny/nj) know when exactly they announce the winners?

they said sometime from feb to april but that’s quite a big range…

thanks!

can any past winners of regional/national recognition show me their works (preferably in the short short story category) so that I can gage the caliber of competition?

Thanks in advance
