Scholastic Art and Writing 2010

ahhh congrats, Luminouzzz!

who else is submitting for the novel? i have no idea what to do for the outline, hahaha!

nil, region-at-large winners aren’t notified until April. I got this directly from the site:

Participation in the Writing Region-at-Large
Participants will submit their work to the Alliance for regional-level adjudication. Young Writers earning regional-level recognition will receive Gold Key Awards, the symbol of excellence in The Awards. These regional award recipients will be notified by mail and will receive Gold Key lapel pins and certificates of recognition by April 2010. Gold Key writing submissions advance to national adjudication. Writers who receive national recognition will be notified in late- April 2010.

I entered the RAL too - submitted a personal essay/memoir. I’ve been trying not to think about it though because April so far away -__-

woah april is so far away! but if i remember correctly, that’s when i received my packet ( i said march before but i actually think it was april) HOWEVER- my teacher received notification late february. : D

no I don’rt mean region atlarge
i mean silver key or certificate of merit…

^depends on regional deadline I guess?

I’m starting to wonder why aria and I (California Region) were notified so late. We received our e-mails on the 2nd, and the RSVP for the banquet was due by the 4th. Is everyone notified at the same time, or are gold keys notified earlier?

I’m feeling anxious now.

Luminouzz, isn’t your banquet on the 11th? That’s not such a long wait. Good luck! And be sure to tell us how you did, so we can congratulate/commiserate.

^Yep, it’s on the 11th. I’ll tell you guys  Either I’ll be elated and you’ll hear right after I get home, or I’ll be depressed and my update won’t come for a few days. Lol. Thanks for the luck either way <3

And I’m still curious to know why Aria and I were notified two days before the RSVP date. It was a short notice.

I have a few questions for you guys who entered:

1) Could I enter this without my school actually… I guess supporting the program?
2) Is this done all electronically? Do you not have to send any hard copies in?
3) Not too important, but. Anybody enter & win in the visual art area? I would love to see  it seems that most everybody is writing.

I attempted to enter it, but the whole process confused me a lot, especially with no teachers or anything to help me out. So I gave up (too easily), which I’m regretting A LOT. I shall definitely enter next year… and not be stupid and ask the art teachers for help. :|||

^No idea about art, can’t help you there.

Silver key - memoir
Merit - short short story

Yay! Well done, Luminouzz. Next year, pure gold :)

I’ll try my best. I felt disappointed this year, but in a good way. Hopefully this motivates me. Thanks for your support :]

I submitted a personal memoir as well, but to WRAL…is the notification date later than to other regions?

That’s correct, lucky. See post #102 by Brie62. WRAL regional gold key winners may not hear until April. Then, national winners from all regions are notified around late April.

Congrats Luminouzz! i know how it must suck, wanting to get that gold key! but you have a whole year to write a bunch of new pieces and submit them : D how many winners were there and how was the banquet? i couldn’t go! : (

cathedra: teachers usually receive notification late february about wral gold key winners. YOU may not hear about it until april (which was the case with me and others) but your teacher will most likely hear about it. so brace yourself for the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the heads up, quinone. Congrats on your awards too!

I just had the same experience as quinone. My teacher announced in class today that I won WRAL gold keys. luckyme, you should check with your teacher.

wow congrats everyone!

btw, how helpful is a regional gold key (writing) in getting into ivies?

i got one last week and i’m debating whether to update my colleges on this or not. obv it would be a good thing to add, but since its a regional award and not a national one idk if it would be THAT important. and im not applying as a science major… anythoughts?

Hey straightoar, when did your teacher receive the email? I’m in RAL as well–not to mention, are you RAL in the U.S or outside of it? Thanks.

P.S What if you entered a submission without your teacher’s email. Would you get notified now or in April?

Thanks.

Hey AnW, I’m in WRAL in U.S. My teacher didn’t say when she was notified. You should just ask yours. If your teacher doesn’t know, then I guess you’ll have to wait.

eh, you can if you want. it certainly won’t hurt, and if you have other interest in writing it’ll show your talent. i don’t think it will make a significant difference in your application though.
