Scholastic Art and Writing 2010

hey congrats straightoar…what state are you from? i wonder if they’ve notified all teachers…

Hey thks luckyme. Here’s hoping the same for you! I’m from NJ. No school tomorrow. Whee!! My guess is that Scholastic informed every school in WRAL at about the same time. You should just ask your teacher. If he/she isn’t good about checking email, try asking the principal’s secretary.

congrats, guys! that’s awesome!

siiiigh i’m WRAL, too, and my school’s been snowed out for the past two days. my teachers haven’t told me anything (i’m from nj) via email or whatever, which is usually how i contact them…ugh i really hope i got something; i poured my heart and soul into that portfolio :-\

if not…oh well.

Congrats to you too, FC. Even if your portfolio doesn’t win any awards, Stanford is a fantastic consolation prize! I bet you’ll miss the snow days though  Not being a senior, I have no idea about the decision process for portfolios. Notification for them may well come later because of the larger body of work and the $$. In any case, you’ll have the satisfaction that you have given your all. Be proud of that, award or no award.

Has anyone heard from art-region-at-large yet?? Im still anxiously waiting to hear anything… i entered the later january date vs. the december deadline, but I don’t know if that makes any difference as to when teachers/students hear back from scholastic.

Last week, I started hearing about people being notified of Art RAL gold keys, so you should keep your ears open for next two weeks. I can’t imagine that Jan vs Dec would make any difference other than in the entry fee. Then again, most of the regulars in this thread entered for writing, so we really don’t know how the art decision and notification process works. Good luck!

Thanks for the help…the scholastic process can be a little daunting at times. I forgot to ask, are notifications only coming in by email to teachers, or are they sending them by mail to schools?? The teacher I listed as my reference quit soon after I sent in my stuff in, so I don’t know when I will hear anything back about ARAL… :(

I hear ya, ZnO. The wait can definitely drive you crazy. I was actually in a similar situation. My teacher went on maternity leave and I had no idea when she was coming back. I was about to ask the principal’s secretary whether the school had heard anything from WRAL when my teacher returned last Monday. Then I kept quiet and mercifully she announced the good news on Thursday. Maybe you could check with your principal’s secretary or email Scholastic. Good luck!

Best of luck to everyone still waiting! I am hoping to hear from the writing RAL soon - has anyone else in the Southeast received news yet?

A bit off topic, but I’m curious for next year: Are entrants permitted to send as many poems as they wish (as long as the total line count meets the limit) for only one entrance fee, even if the poems are not a part of a collection? The language of the guidelines confused me to the point of concern, so I ended up submitting only one poem!

I was notified of my Writing RAL Gold Key today! I’m thrilled. Congratulations to everyone :)

I got a Gold Key for Personal Narrative in Writing Region at Large!

Congratulations to everyone else!!! :]

has anyone heard anything about wral portfolios being announced? specifically nonfiction ones? thanks.

lacrimosa, now you can cry for joy  And congrats, tsubomi! luckyme, FC, ZnO and alice munro, hang in there. Hope you hear great news soon!

btw, lacrimosa, I read the Writing Categories to say that multiple poems count as one entry only if (a) they are submitted as a collection and (b) they don’t collectively exceed 100/200 lines.

Also, alice, I am not familiar with notification for portfolios and haven’t heard anyone in RAL say his/her portfolio, art or writing, has won. Good luck!

Yay! What categories did you win in?

Me? Poetry and persuasive writing. I’m happy enough already, so not anxious about national results.

Quick question - is Region at Large the same as the “IT” state? I’m an international student, and I’m feeling pretty anxious about the results! I live in China, and mail takes forever to get here, due to the ridiculous postage system we have. Anyways, if they’re not the same, does anyone know approximately when the results come in for us? Thanks in advance.

Also, congrats to all of you who’ve received notification! :D

Hey sandfishes, do you go to an American school? International students are eligible for Scholastic only if they are enrolled in Grades 7 – 12 of an American school abroad. If you do, you should check with your teacher. In the U.S., they are notified by email way ahead of students receiving their awards by mail. In your case, the timing difference is probably even greater. Also, my guess is that the fictitious “IT” state that you belong to is a part of the Region-at-Large just like any other state (or part of one) in the U.S. that is not covered by a regional affiliate. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, my school is an American one overseas. I don’t think I was given the option of putting down teacher contact information though, so I guess I’ll just wait for the mail. But thanks for the fast reply!

Hi, I was wondering if notifications for senior portfolios are out yet.
Were winners last year announced the same time as notifications for other categories?

Side question:

Does anyone else think its kinda weird that you can submit like 10 pieces (assuming you’re a really good writer) and 2 of them win Gold keys while the other 8 must have apparently been not even worthy of an Honorable Mention? hmmm…

^ are you region at large? region at large does not give honorable mentions NOR silver keys. ONLY, i repeat ONLY gold keys. a lot of people dont know this.

and notifications are given out per region i believe, i’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with category. i could be wrong though.
