I won a Gold Key in photography. Just wondering, is it possible to win more than one Gold Key, or is it capped at 1 for everybody?

Way to go, Eric! It is definitely possible to win more than one. You can win as many gold keys as there are categories.

lovedoodling, I dunno.

Sorry, could have phrased my question better.

For example, I submitted six pieces in photography. If all six pieces were amazing, could I have gotten six Gold Keys, or is the # of Gold Keys I can get in each category capped at 1?

WRAL gold key in personal essay
Hmm I’m not sure if you can get multiple gold keys in the same category…possibly not…

^You can, at least locally. I got three in poetry last year.

And apparently I got at least one this year, although the library is being weird and not notifying me of which ones got awards. But I’m invited to a banquent for Gold Key-ers!

Am I the only one who submits art?

…

Congrats, luckyme! You shouldn’t have kept us in suspense
Good job, glassesarechic! (And I agree they are.) It seems strange that you can win 3 gold keys in poetry, but I looked at the guidelines and could find nothing that limits submission to one entry per category. Besides, every regional affiliate can set its own rules.

porkperson, almost all of us submitted writing. I only remember Purplicious from last month as the other arts person.

No, I submitted art (photography) too.

My bad, Eric.

glassesarechic : What region are you in? We live in Central Jersey and my daughter has been anxiously waiting to hear. Our school is very much into sports and music and does not pay as much attention to the writing and the arts students. Her creative writing teacher is very supportive of her works though. I don’t know if Scholastic would reply to him or to the Principal’s office.

^^ I got gold key for drawing in ARAL. For a while, I lost hope. Now, I’ll have to ask all my other teachers. Thanks Straightoar.

Congrats, AnW! Nice to hear about your gold key. Good luck chasing down your other deadbeat teachers, lol.

lovedoodling, I was just notified by email (I’m from NC, so whatever region that is). My English teacher and I were sent one email about Young Artists or some such thing, which you’re only eligible for if you won a Gold Key, and then I got an email about an awards banquet. However, I never got one expliciting stating my award, nor did my teacher. Last year, I knew because I received my certificates/keys in the mail around this time, but it seems those are coming later this year.

WRAL portfolio gold key. That one was a bit of a nail-biter, because they seem to have sent a package directly to my school instead of notifying my teacher by e-mail…no one had any idea for a little while. Congrats to everyone else who won.:)

Congrats, inhabited_world! I hope the long wait has made the good news even sweeter. My guess is that yours is an unusual case. Scholastic probably sent the notification to your school in a “to whom it may concern” package as a last resort (instead of addressing it to your teacher) because they don’t have your “correctly formatted address.” This is a good reminder to double check entry forms to make sure they meet all the guidelines.

Winning is gratifying, but, no matter what, we should all be proud of our talent and passion. When I look at someone like Fashion Capital, who attended the Iowa Young Writers’ Workshop and is going to Stanford, it is clear that while the winners probably deserve to win, those who don’t may be every bit as talented, if not more.

lovedoodling, your daughter’s creative writing teacher should consider registering online with Scholastic. Even though doing so won’t help your daughter, he will establish a direct connection for registration and notification to assist students in the future. This is from the FAQs of the Scholastic Online Registration System:

Question: I am a teacher. What I need to do for my students to participate in The Awards?
Answer: Teachers may register online to gain access to student registration management tools. These tools will help you support your students throughout the registration process. However, teachers are not required to register in online system.

straightroar,
Thanks for patiently answering the questions.

Hi, I am not sure if her teacher registered or not. She registered and got the bar codes and completed the forms and the teacher signed them and gave her the sealed recommendation letter etc. She registered all her works and printed the forms for the teacher to sign. His name, school and e-mail addresses were in her registration. I know last year he helped her with the registration and the results went to him. Last year she had regional gold key and national silver.

Hi, ld. If your daughter included her teacher’s email address in her registration form, Scholastic would know to notify him of her award at that address. That was how my teacher found out about mine. Have your daughter ask him to check his junk mailbox, in case Scholastic sent the notification by bulk email. At this point in time, she could also email Scholastic directly to ask - info@artandwriting.org. Great job with last year’s awards and good luck with the portfolio!
