national silver- journalism

artandwriting.org is the website

Is anyone doing dramatic script? If so, are there any specifications for formatting?

Where can I read winning writing works from previous years?
I want to get a feel of what kind of writing wins.

I searched around on Google and I found this:

[Sophomore's short story published in “Best Teen Writing of 2007” (updated) | Online Gargoyle](http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/og/news/2007/12/sophomores-short-story-published-best)

Sorry for the double post, but do you think I would be breaking any rules if I wrote a parody of a very popular show on TV right now? I’m kind of worried it would be disqualified because it’s obviously based off of a running program and its characters.

^ I read that first part…and…honestly?..I didn’t think it was that great at all.
The storyline is centuries old; the writing is elementary…idk.

Yeah, I didn’t think it was great either, but I guess there was really marvelous about it overall. I dunno. Lol

Here’s a good link with many short stories from this competition: http://www.artandwriting.org/gallery/2007/BTW_2007.pdf

So excited! I always love Scholastic (this’ll be my third year entering) and I think I’m going to submit a personal essay, 3-4 collections of poetry (anyone else psyched that we can enter more than one this year?!) and some photography.

I didn’t think that excerpt was very good, either.

On a different note, my novel is going really well. I’m pleased. :)

I have a question - what exactly do they mean by a portfolio? If I were to submit a collection of poems that all have a similar theme, would that count as a “portfolio”? Or are they trying to refer to artworks as “portfolios”? I don’t get it …

^ pg 3.

hopefully that helps.

ahh, it seems others here are struggling for the deadline as well? if i sent it tuesday morning would it get in on time (for the writing category)? i live in LA, so i’m not sure if i should even bother sending it anymore.

I don’t know if by Jan. 9, they mean we have to send it by then or have it arrive there by then.

it has to arrive there by then.

from the link i posted:
“ $10 fee per individual submission and $30 per portfolio submission if
received by Friday, January 9, 2009.
Works that arrive after January 9 will not be considered.”

Oh $hit. 10 char

Should I go FedEx or US Postal Service Express Mail? They are both about as fast as they get.

Oh yeah, I’m from LA, too.

I’m doing two short stories, a poetry collection, a personal essay if I finish it…anyone want to read my work? I can read urs too… I don’t think having it read and getting not edits but general comments are against the rules right?

hey, guys, just for your info (you all probably know this), anyone not in New York should send it by US Postal Service Express Mail on Wednesday MORNING. If you get it in early, it should be there by Thursday. I guess you could send it on Thursday, but if anything happens, it may not get there on Friday. So just to be safe, wednesday morning is good.

i so wanna be that girl that tiki has on the link
