The Richmond Metro area heard back today.

One Gold/American Voices and Vision and a silver key!

My letter came in today and I got a silver key for one of my pieces.
I’ve never participated in this before; does anyone know if it’s worth it to go to the regional ceremony and get a so-called certificate? If it’s just a cute little “thanks for participating” note I don’t want to bother.

whoa- that was certainly quick…and hmmm- i left the ceremony early last year. the only kind of cool thing that happened was that they give you an actual, tiny key.

Which you get in the mail if you’re RAL :)

I called today. They send out decisions for Region-at-Large “no later than late March.” Swell.

What is RAL?

Region-At-Large, for entrants of the contest who do not live in a county that has a regional contest. When students submit to RAL, they submit their work directly into the national contest.

:( Sad that RAL notifications are so late. I’m really anxious to know how my pieces fared.

Yes, if you win RAL you get a little golden key and your work is forwarded to national judging. If you win there, then you are at nationals and get a letter. I don’t think you get a letter if you don’t win.

I’ve always thought people in RAL kind of his a disadvantage, because a majority of submissions are from that pool. So, you know, there is more competition, as opposed to one little state that might get 50 applications and they have to select five (even if they are not the best) to go onto national judging, etc. Even if those people don’t stand a chance at winning that, they at least get a little golden key.

^Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I would think entering into RAL would be a disadvantage? It makes me a little nervous.

i think RAL gets more slots. that would make sense…i dont know that for sure, but its a possibility

This is my first year doing the scholastic competition. I got a letter back today, and I was just looking for some clarity on what it says. “I would like to congratulate you on your work being selected for recognition. This is a very prestigious award…” etc. And it goes on to say where and when the exhibition and awards will be held. Besides that, it says nothing. Exactly what does this mean for me? Is this just a kind of honorable mention thing?

I think so. Because if you had made it onto Nationals, they would have told you this. I highly doubt they’ve sent out those, yet.

I’m curious, does this site allow the posting of names, etc? I kind of want to friend the next generation of the SAWA on facebook.

Actually, my teacher just called me and said that I’ve won gold and silver keys.
Apparently those letters just aren’t informative.

^ Silver keys don’t go to nationals, so that might explain it.

Good luck, everyone!

Do the scholastic people contact your teacher or you directly by mail or phone…? If you dont win anything, will they contact you at all?

So in general, only gold keys go to nationals. After that, its either gold or silver national awards, correct?
Did anyone on here enter for art? It seems as if everyone entered writing, film, photograhy only…
Im so nervous! :[

I entered for Art and as far as I know you’ll just know if you get an award through MAIL. I lived in NJ and the museum which hold the event is not updating their website nor posting the Scholastic Art and Writing award winners. But the funny thing is… the museum emailed me a lot of invites to their current exhibits and art classes then after a week I receive two seperate letters regarding my award. Gold Key in Painting and Honorable mention for Art Portfolio. I thought it was a Rejection letter like NFAA send to those failed applicants…

Its my first and would be the last time joining the contest… My question is what would be the awards for winning Regional Gold Key? National Gold Key?.. not on Art Portfolio but for individual works.

So, as SaveD pointed out at the bottom of page 7, RAL winners recieve awards in march. All of the current key winners enterred within a region correct?
