Hey! Anyone applying to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards this year?

C’mon guys I’m not going to talk to myself :P

Oooh I’m entering! I’ll probably enter five-ish poetry collections, a short story, a personal essay, I think two photographs and…maybe more writing. Right now I’m kind of concerned about my poetry collections. I’m hoping that maybe I’ve just read them so much that they seem boring to me… What categories are you entering iun?

I’m entering mainly paintings (3 oil paintings, 1 watercolor), a pencil and pastel drawing, a poetry collection (first time I’m doing anything in the writing category), and possibly a short story.

I’m entering a bunch of writing, 2-3 poems and maybe some stories. This is my first year entering, to any of you who have done this before is it really competitive?

I’m entering an art portfolio and a writing portfolio and probably a few individual paintings and poems too.

@sillyface It’s pretty competitive, especially when it comes to nationals.

Good luck to all!

@sillyface It’s pretty (definitely) competitive at the national level, but I think regionals really depends on the area.

Well I bit the bullet and mailed out my forms yesterday, I’m not expecting to win but it’ll be a good experience. Good luck guys!

Quick question: Is there a way to check that my forms did not get lost in the mail? I’m probably just stressing, but on my bank account it doesn’t say that the money from the check I sent was deposited. I sent my forms on Wednesday (12/10), so it was before the deadline. Do they notify you by email or something when they get your forms? I’m so worried now

Don’t worry about it sillyface, the post office is very reliable and it makes sense that the check hasn’t been deposited, since they are probably collecting them to put them in the bank all at once. If you didn’t send it with tracking (i.e. Priority), there’s no way to be really SURE sure, but I think you are fine.

I have a question to anyone who writes. I’m really afraid my writing comes off as pretentious. I don’t mean that my work is verbose or anything, but just the subject matter itself. The topic is kind of abstract and I’m at the point where I’m not sure what category it even fits in. I’m concerned that my topic and tone will reflect negatively on the judges.

@2016xiejia Don’t worry about it. I think the judges are really open to all topics and matters.

@sillyface I know what you mean; I stress about the post office all the time too!

Hi guys! This is my first year entering, and I’m submitting a persuasive paper. Good luck to all!

I’m submitting four works of poetry (some include more than one poem) and one entry in the flash fiction category! I really hope I win something, and I really hope the rest of you win something as well.

We’re mailing out our forms either today or tomorrow, so it’ll be postmarked on time. I’m actually still writing new poems to put in in place of older ones xD

I finally mailed out my forms! I’m submitting so many different entries this year, hope that maybe increases my chance? Good luck!!!

I’m actually a bit afraid of winning anything for one of my poems (or even several of them) because some of the subject matter is… er… challenging, and my parents will want to read it. There’s this one poem that is super-personal to me (but I also think it’s my best one) and it would be awkward if my parents read it… It’s basically about a girl who wanted to be popular when she was little and spent her entire life chasing after that one word; although it isn’t a strict detail of my life, it includes some stuff about bullying that I’d prefer not be seen by them.

But then, it’s also one of my best poems. I know I’m submitting it at this point.

Urgent question!!

Is it okay for me to reference an author’s use of language in my work? For example if it was something like:
The summer made the earth “a scorching land of fire” as John Smith would write.

Is that acceptable, or would it violate copyright laws?

Also, if that is the case, would I have to check off “writing found in books and another person” even though I gave the author credit and it was just a phrase?

Guys! ! ! I’m entering too! ! ! I’m so excited and nervous! ! ! Can we be excited and nervous together? (I’ll stop using so many exclamation marks now haha :D)

I was going to write another piece but then I didn’t have time lol. Oh well. I uploaded my piece online tonight, and I’m sending my forms tomorrow.

Anyone else in the Northeast Region?
