false alarm with the email, just gold and silver. but still really happy!!!
Congratulations to all! My daughter won gold medal for one of her writing pieces. Her first time winning anything from Scholastic! She is a senior expecting to receive most of her admissions decisions in the next week to 10 days. I wonder if there is any point to updating the schools this late in the game?
Thank you guys so much! I hope your results come in soon! These things are so subjective, they’re not really a reflection of your work, but I’m grateful anyway! @phanakin @Lunarlitgend
CONGRATS @phanakin
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! Hope to see some of y’all in NYC!
hey everyone! estimated, about how many people enter the contest?
@katherineh4 I think it said about 340,000
I know this has probably been said a thousand times before, but for anyone feeling dejected or disappointed with their results, Scholastic and other contests are not the end-all-be-all when it comes to your work. Oftentimes, when we face rejection, it may feel like the world is out to get us, or our experiences, emotions, and writing abilities aren’t good enough; please know that this is not true. It can be so hard not to compare ourselves or feel like we’re inherently less of a writer/artist when we see peers or even random strangers winning left and right, and this is how I felt the first two years when I didn’t win anything nationally; it felt like something was wrong about me and my writing–that I just wasn’t good enough and would never get there. Please know that making it to nationals is an incredible accomplishment, and what a couple random judges think about your work after having read it for a few minutes does not reflect the amazing talent and hard work you poured into your pieces. This process is SO incredibly subjective; keep your head up and keep writing/creating! Your work matters, and YOU matter <3
So excited—My daughter won a national silver! Don’t give up… she had 2 gold keys last year that didn’t get anything. This year when she only had one she thought she didn’t have a chance (and it was not her favorite painting) but you never know—don’t be discouraged, keep trying! And I agree with earlier sentiments about subjectivity. One of her paintings that didn’t even get an honorable mention at regionals just won her first place and $500 at a local competition. Art is very subjective!
Sorry for the late response guys! I just needed to take a break from this chat for a while especially since I didn’t get the results that I hoped. Yeah. I didn’t make it and it’s my second year too. I needed time to remind myself that, as you guys said, it doesn’t define me as a writer. But it’s hard, like you guys also said, when your hard work is rejected and everyone else gets accepted. Next year is my last year and I want to have hope but I don’t think it’ll last. I’ll just submit one more time and hope that I make it. But congratulations to everyone who did. You all deserve it and have fun at NYC
To clarify, I am NOT an NSPP nominee but I’m really thankful for my awards and congrats to everyone who won! Also, scholastic is soo subjective so if you didn’t win it doesn’t equate your writing with anything less than perfect. Those of you who won gold keys, that’s already a HUGE accomplishment so congrats!
Sorry for the late response as well (I haven’t actually logged into my CC account in ages, so I kinda forgot about this). I didn’t win anything this year, unfortunately. It hurts a little because I did pretty well last year, but honestly I’m not too bummed or surprised… I think my submissions just weren’t of the same quality, due to a variety of problems I was struggling with when I wrote them. Congrats to all the national winners, though! I didn’t go to the National ceremony last year, but I heard it was really fun! See y’all next year!
@Lunarlitgend I’m kind of sad we only have one year left to compete together :(. But I bet we’ll both do better next year! We won’t throw away our shot!
@FlameAlchemist LOL #Hamilton!
I’m pretty sad about that too but, as you said, I’m sure next year will be our strongest comeback year! I’ll try my hardest to keep up hope for not just myself but for you and everyone else who worked hard but weren’t acknowledged. Good luck! I believe in you!
Meanwhile SAS Application results will be coming out next month so for those of us who didn’t make it but applied for SAS, hopefully our results will be more positive!
After that I guess I’ll be making a 2019-2020 Scholastic chat for all the enthusiasm to start up again once September 12, 2019 arrives
Random q if anyone’s attended the national ceremony before. Does reserving tickets now guarantee you’ll have them (for national ceremony)?
Does anyone know if the national medal scholarships apply to any school or just ccs
has anyone heard back from SAS yet?
@wistfulwords Results for SAS don’t come out until April 17th
y’all what do we wear to the national ceremony / maker prom ???
@shysquid Sorry for the late response. I’m not going because I didn’t make it. But, from what I’ve seen, where something formal. I would say fancy but I don’t want to be misleading in the sense that you wear something TOO fancy. As long as it’s formal and appropriate, something you’d probably wear to a semiformal prom or a small formal gathering, then it should be fine.
By the way everyone, a Scholastic 2019-2020 forum has been made! So to those who plan on submitting to scholastic next year should definitely participate in the forum again, especially to those of us who didn’t make it and/or it’ll be our last year submitting! I was planning on creating it but, even better, a 2019 winner of the Gold Medal Writing portfolio started the forum and is willing to support us and give us some advice!
