Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2018-2019

Am I the only one aiming for honorable mentions and silver keys? My goal is 1 silver key and 3 honorable mentions for the 5 works I’m submitting…

Everyone else seems to be going for the medals haha

Also, is the gallery broken for anyone else? It only shows one story at a time for me, and even then it doesn’t let me read it

Yep, the gallery is broken lol. Also, is anyone else having trouble seeing their submissions? Whenever I log into my account, it just loads and loads and loads… and never appears.

@beautifulchaos Yeah, that’s been happening to me too and it’s driving me crazy! I feel like it’s because so many of us are trying to use the portal at once, so it’s just lagging and slowing down now.

Just to be clear: after I’ve submitted all the forms/info/story, does the system allow further editing despite saying that it’s already been submitted to Scholastic? (as long as it’s before the deadline?)

ugh… such a relief to have submitted. Like it’s out of my hands. Let’s get that silver key bread! :smiley:

Also, this online registration system is a godsend. Mailing is such a hassle!

@Kingtape Yeah! I’m pretty sure you can continue to edit until the deadline has passed. I’ve been going back to my stories, reviewing them and making some changes and will be doing so again on the day of the deadline before it’s completely turned in and we can no longer edit.

@Kingtape And I agree! It feels good to finish all those stories :smiley:
I wish you good luck and I hope you get that silver key or gold key :slight_smile:

@Kingtape I’ve already gotten a couple of gold keys and silver keys, so my goal is improvement. But a silver or gold regional key is great especially if this is your first time entering!

Wow I’m actually so bummed out I missed this. I checked the deadlines, and I just realized that I missed it.

Are there any other writing competitions I can still enter?

@wistfulwords

Nice! Man, I’m so jealous of people who are naturally good at writing.

I know I don’t have the requisite talent for anything on the national level. Regional gold would be a miracle, honestly. I’ll be content with a silver.

Wish I knew about this thing when I was a freshman… then I might have had time to get better. Sadly, I’m a junior now and still trash.

Hopefully I’ll have improved by senior year lol

Good luck on your stuff! Gold keys are already impressive…

If you wouldn’t mind sharing, have you won anything nationally?

Also the online gallery is back up again, hallelujah!

@kingtape in scholastic or any competition? Because I’ve won multiple national awards in writing but nothing from scholastic.

@wontonandrice Scholastic and Youngarts and have both passed this year.
I found a pretty long list of various competitions here: https://www.weareteachers.com/student-writing-contests/ and here: https://blog.reedsy.com/writing-contests/ but I’m not super sure if you’d find any helpful but those lists could be worth a read.

It’s definitely okay to start prepping for next year though. Best wishes!

@Lunarlitgend tx! You too!

@wistfulwords huh, I wasn’t aware of national stuff beyond Scholastic… did you win something in YoungArts? Other than that I’m not familiar

@Kingtape Yup! as well as other, smaller competitions - I’ve been the first place winner or runner up in multiple smaller competitions.

@wistfulwords do you mind stating which ones? Sorry for intruding, I just haven’t been able to find many competitions that easily

Minor question: are we supposed to title our submissions in the actual submission?

I titled some of mine and am not sure whether to remove them, especially since there’s about 20 minutes before closing time

eh, whatever. Deadline’s passed.

To paraphrase Eliot,

this is how the world ends

not with a bang

but with frenzied screaming after attempting to edit a poem but not saving it in time for the deadline

GL to all! :slight_smile:

Let’s get that honorable mention bread!
