Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2017-2018

Hey everyone! I haven’t seen a thread for this so I wanted to start one  what categories are you guys submitting in?

I’m planning on submitting for poetry and short story. This will be my first year and I’m super nervous! What are you submitting in?

My daughter is submitting two paintings and several photos. Last year she won honorable mention in the regional competition.

Are you guys going to tag your work?

I’m submitting in poetry, too! Also flash fiction and maybe dramatic script but I’m not sure yet. It’s so nerve wracking!!

I didn’t tag most of mine bc I don’t really want to give my piece something cheesy like ‘love’ or ‘family.’ What are you guys doing about tags?

I’m probably not going to tag; it seems kind of tacky, and I don’t know what words to use besides corny ones like “hope” and “love”.

Hey guys! I’m submitting 26 things this year lol. I’m doing poetry, short story, flash fiction, portfolio, critical essay, script, and memoir. I’ve won 9 things from them before so I’m excited for this year

I’m submitting a lot too haha! Go big or go home right

I was wondering if someone could tell me about the award process (it’s my first time entering). When do they usually announce the winners, and do they announce key and medal winners at the same time? Also, is it only gold medal winners that go to Carnegie Hall?

26? That’s awesome lol

@OneTimeAngel For regionals, when they announce the winners depends on your region. I’m in the Northeast so miy results come out January 31st. They release keys at first, and if you get a gold key you have to wait until around March for the National list. And yeah, gold medals only get to go. They just changed it to that last year.

But haha yeah fee waivers saved me this year from completely drowning in the fees. I’m aspiring for a medal.

Also, special national awards like American Voices/Visions also get to go to Carnegie

@dreamthief001 Thank you so much! I’m in the Northeast too so I’m assuming January 31st as well. Right now I’m planning on putting in 4 or 5 pieces (aka everything I submitted to YoungArts

I have a question for any previous winners— what type of notification do they send to your educator and when? Are they invited to Carnegie Hall as well?

@dreamthief001 I’m not a winner myself, but I do have a couple classmates that won. Usually teachers find out when the national list comes out. Pretty sure it’s up to the student to bring the teacher, as when you win, they ask you how big your party will be and you have to tell them within a specific timeframe. Though if you get a gold medal your sponsoring teacher supposedly gets $500.

do all the regions get their results out at about the same time, just out of curiosity? because i just checked the west writing region-at-large and apparently we get results jan 30 at 2pm PST. also, do y’all know how large the “region at large” groups are??

Ah, that makes sense thank you! I’m kind of nervous to bring all the forms to my teacher, but I guess I’ll just have to get over it.

Also, does anyone else feel super confident about their pieces one day and then horrible the next or is it just me??

ditto on being nervous about bringing forms to your teacher. Also, you’re not alone in thinking your pieces are amazing one day and then thinking they suck another. It’s a natural part of the writing process, lol. As writers, we are definitely our toughest critics. It’s hard not to compare your writing with someone else’s, especially in a competitive format like this.

hey! this is my first year entering poetry. just wondering, if i enter poems as a collection, will the cohesiveness of the poems/whether they actually speak to each other as a collection affect my score? i.e. if one individual poem is good enough for gold but the collection isn’t strong as a whole, will i be marked down?
