Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2017-2018

@wistfulwords Same here! My 9th grade year and I got a gold key.
Can anybody let me know how many medals in critical essay? Thanks.

@geometry1761 Just do command+F and type “critical essay” on the PDF with the national award recipients.

command f doesn’t work because it’s a scanned document. so it basically registers as a picture rather than a table. at least, it didn’t work for me

@nobodycansaveme I’m not really mad or anything–trust me, I’m freaking out about getting a national medal!!! It’s just that I was a Midwest BIG nominee, so I was crossing my fingers on that one. Don’t give up! Trust me, what really defines a writer is not the medals he or she earns, but the fact that he or she enjoys writing! Besides, contests like this can be really weird. One of my best works didn’t even get a regional award. The fact that we all won regional awards is a really great honor! Don’t sweat nationals.

Also, do any of you guys enter other contests? Last year my piece was featured in a summer reading contest in the NYT and I’m entering an op-ed piece for the editorial contest. Also entering some spoken word into the YoungArts awards but I don’t expect to win.

@wistfulwords I’m entering into Scholastic again that’s for sure, YoungArts, and a few local competitions like WriteOn and I think that’s about it. This year other than Scholastic I won a Young Writers Mini Saga contest and had my work chosen for publication along with a few other works so that’s pretty exciting :stuck_out_tongue:

@nobodycansaveme And hey dude, don’t crush yourself, I mean when I found out I lost I may sound happy online but I cried for an hour nonstop especially seeing everyone here getting a medal and I didn’t. But hey that doesn’t mean we’re terrible writers! I only submitted one work and you submitted more and GOT TWO GOLD KEYS!! That’s big! I bet you’re an amazing writer and believe me when you submit to Scholastic again you’ll give them a big slap and make them regret not choosing you! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise remember what you said! WE ARE AMAZING WRITERS AND WE LOST WITH DIGNITY! We qualified for nationals for God’s sake! Put it on your college application and they WILL be impressed. YOU ARE AN AMAZING WRITER! This contest DOES NOT justify that. Winner or not!

hey guys, also remember to submit to the johns hopkins youth magazine writing awards! they have rolling contests every few months for varying categories. i was lucky enough to win one year. it is especially prestigious because the contest is also technically an international one with an award of publication in the JHU CTY magazine, so def look into it! here’s a good link for more comps in case anyone wants it

Does anyone know when National Student Poets get announced?

@skipper99 Thank you! :smiley:

@StreenaSkywalker and no I’m afraid not, I mean scholastic should have it on their website shouldn’t they? :o maybe even email the winners? I’m unsure of how the process works so I’m sorry if my help is skewed :)>-

@skipper99 I think that contest is on hiatus… but getting published in general for anyone is still great and congrats to you on winning! If anyone wants, I could make a thread of prestigious writing competitions in case anyone wants to find more from this thread,

@wistfulwords That sounds like a great idea!

By the way guys, if you want I can start a new thread for Next years Scholastic contest 2018-2019 as well as for YoungArts! Disclaimer though, YoungArts is probably gonna be cut throat or tough cause it’s WAYYY more competitive than Scholastic

@Lunarlitgend YESSSS PLEASE DO  also I did submit to YoungArts for their 2017 awards but didn’t get anything (of course). They’re so much more competitive! Though I don’t know, maybe they actually disqualified me because I made my spacing 1.9 instead of 2 to fit it all into their page limit.

@Lunarlitgend and anyone else here’s the thread of awards: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/common-application/2063607-prestigious-writing-competitions-p1.html?new=1

Didn’t get Young Arts 2017 either, but that was before I began writing poetry seriously (last winter)
I started a Young Arts 2018 thread btw: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/2063461-young-arts-2019.html#latest

@StreenaSkywalker They don’t announce NSP until awhile later, because the 35 semifinalists for the program have to send in an extra portfolio to be judged by some of the most famous modern poets

Here’s the new thread for the Scholastic Art and Writing 2018-2019 Awards! http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/arts/2063670-scholastic-art-and-writing-awards-2018-2019.html#latest

time to start waiting for SAS notification… pretty nervous about that. it must be SO competitive
