@FlameAlchemist Congratulations, that is a HUGE deal!
@Samsmom2019 Thanks! It’s just regional, though, so I’m still holding my breath for Nationals.
i can’t believe there’s only 13 more days until we find out, ah. really crossing my fingers for anything at nationals, i’m a senior and this is my last chance. then again the chances are slim, so i’ll try to not get too hopeful lol
@skipper99 Good luck! I bet you’ll get a prize. I’m so nervous as well. I keep checking my email for updates!
12 days left for nationals. This is my 2nd year entering. Last year I entered and got HM as a 8th grader. This year I got a gold key in critical essay. Good luck to all!
@geometry1761 Counting down the days with you!
Usually they contact you by Email
Me too!!!
First time participating in the Scholastic art and writing awards and I submitted only one work, which was a short story and to my surprise, got a gold key! Midwest region by the way and I am dying for March 13th! Only 10 more days guys!! I wish you all the greatest of luck!!!
for anyone applying for SAS, what are you using the “please describe the uploaded files” section for versus the “Describe your approach to making art/writing. What inspired you to create the works included in your application?”
@dreamthief001 For “Please describe uploaded files” I put a description about the background of my pieces (like what they’re about), what inspired them, what it means to me, etc
And
“Describe your approach to art and writing”
I said what inspires me to write and how I feel when I’m writing, how I write (like when I try to put myself in the mindset of the character that I’m writing so I can really be in their shoes instead of my own), my personal methods for writing, etc.
Hopefully that helps
@Lunarlitgend Fellow midwesty here! My gold keys were all for short stories as well–it’s great to meet someone else from my region! I’m soooo nervous for the 13th–counting down the days!
@dreamthief001 For ‘please describe uploaded files’ I just wrote about the stories I wrote, and what inspired me to write them–I went fairly specific, focusing on the common themes uniting all of my more recent stories as opposed to my key ones. For ‘describe your approach to art and writing’ I went over what I believe the purpose of writing is, (in my opinion, trying to translate various viewpoints on the world into something your readers can understand), and what really influences me in my writing. The questions were pretty vague, so I was a little worried about them.
All my fellow SAS people–has anyone submitted their forms yet? Do you know if it’s first come-first serve? Is it more merit or more need based?
Just a note here, I haven’t submitted my forms yet (I’m an expert in procrastination), and so I’m freaking out a little bit here.
@FlameAlchemist YAYY! Honestly dude I’m so glad that I not only found you but also this forum! I’ve been stressing out so much about this competition that ugh I’m surprised my hair hasn’t fallen out yet and worst part is I had absolutely no one who could relate to me, then BOOM I find this! Oh my goodness the joy I’m feeling right now! I swear I started crying! Congrats on your gold keys for short stories and I hope I get to see you and everyone else at NYC!!!
As for SAS I’m not sure. This is my first time applying and I think they said they give full scholarships in general, at least that’s what I know of, so I’m not entirely sure. I hope it’s not first come, first serve though cause that would be absolutely unfair in my opinion.
Does anyone know how you are notified if you win a medal besides the portal?
8 days until nationals!
@FlameAlchemist @Lunarlitgend It is great to know people from your region (and the same category too!)
Did anyone get a gold key for critical essay in the southeast region?
Thanks for all the info!
@geometry1761 I’m pretty sure they mail it to you. For my state for the Midwest results they’d emailed me the winners for regionals and I think they’ll do the same thing for Nationals, and if so they’ll probably also be emailing the list of the National winners
8 more days til the results guys!!! :-j
@FlameAlchemist oh by the way I hope you don’t mind me asking but how many short stories did you submit and what were they about?
Thank you guys so much for responses about SAS. I’m so nervous that I’m putting the wrong info in the wrong places but hopefully they meant the questions generally!
Eight more days!! I’m so excited for results just so I don’t have to wonder anymore haha
@dreamthief001 LOL You’re welcome! And don’t worry I don’t blame you, the information was pretty vague so all I could do was interpret it the best I could. Let’s just hope the people choosing aren’t to hard core on us on that department! XD
And YASSS me too!! I am so excited! I am so done waiting! I swear when I saw the twitter notification Scholastic sent about the writing judging being over I was like “okay so can we just not wait and know now???”
Just submitted my SAS application–I am so glad that’s over! I doubt I’ll get a scholarship, but it would be super cool if I did! I keep checking my email every half hour for Scholastic updates. I’m super impatient about the results. I just want to know!!!
@Lunarlitgend I submitted four short stories, about varying topics. One was about the death of an eighth grade boy (this was the story that didn’t win anything, and ironically the one I expected to win the most). My Silver Key story was about a dying old man. One of my Gold Key stories was about the decline of tradition in a family over the generations. The other Gold Key one was about a group of outcasts who become friends (sounds really cheerful, but trust me, I made it really depressing). What were yours about? Are you interested in swapping? If so, PM me. By the way, it’s my first time entering as well!!
Eight days and counting till national results come out!
