This thread is for all of us writers (I don't know how it works for artists) to post when/if we hear back from the first round of judgement on the regional level. I think we are all supposed to hear back around April sometime but I'm not sure. I'd just like this thread to be a place for people to share what they submitted to the contest and, perhaps more importantly, post when they hear back. Otherwise those of us who do not will be left in limbo for quite a while. If you're posting because you heard back, be sure to post your region because each region hears back at a different time. If I come across as anxious, it's because I am. I worked so hard for the things I submitted and would very much like for it to pay off. In the meanwhile, let's share what we submitted. I submitted:

One piece of Humor. Essentially just a satire on war and its "virtues."

One work of Science Fiction. The piece was basically about the idea of equality being taken to its logical extreme and democracy devolving into an autocracy while still, technically, remaining a "democracy."

One work of Short Short Fiction. This was short (go figure) and intense, about a man struggling to survive in the desert.

One work of Journalism, originally a social science-ish persuasive essay I wrote for English. Similar in content to my science fiction piece in that it spoke negatively on equality as we operationally define it because creates incongruous standards. We all mindlessly check off that Race category on the SAT but it can have far-reaching implications.

One Personal Narrative. I wrote this about a year ago so the quality of writing, in my opinion, isn't as high as that of the other pieces. It is about the time I broke my arm trying to bodysurf on a surfer's beach...was a bad idea.

UPDATE! Coincidentally, I got results back from today: Gold Key Awards in two of the categories. They sent a letter to my teacher who then told me, I haven’t heard anything else just yet.

Geoffrey, what region’s contest did you enter? I entered Region-at-Large, and I got notified today of a Gold Key in Journalism by my teacher (still haven’t gotten anything in the mail).

However, my friend and I also entered short short stories…I’ll be honest, I expected mine to win something, but his was a truly outstanding and moving piece of writing, and I would be shocked if it didn’t win anything. So do you think its possible that they send out the notifications at different times for each category?

Random question: How prestigious is Scholastic, exactly? Worth putting on your resume? I entered it on a lark without knowing that much about it…

lol SaveD, when I saw his thread title and username, I was going to post something of the same effect…I believe I have something of a talent for writing (I’ve been in the honors/AP track in my school), but I’m going to reserve that skill for college essays since I’m more interested in the sciences. I’m speculating, however, that my poor verbosity would preclude me from acquiring any sort of accolade from such competitions (actually, I just disapprove of convoluting language by relying on high-fluetent vocubulary).

PS: Since the people reading this are most likely infatuated with the study of the English language and literature, you should recognize one of the most fundamental satirical styles (sarcasm).

It’s possible that they do come out at different times. I just don’t think it’s likely. I entered five things and thought that the two things that won weren’t my very best works. I guess writers can’t be their own judges.

Hm. I never got the teacher signature, so they won’t tell me through her, but they said that if I win anything, they’d notify me and have me get the signature. I haven’t heard anything (yet?).
