School Application Checklist

My son has started his senior year in high school and we are pulling together the information related to the various schools that he is interested in. As a potential voice major, it is interesting seeing all of the different parts of the application/audition process. Therefore, we were going to start putting together a chart of all of the various parts of the process and I was wondering if anyone might have a template that I could get a copy of as opposed to creating one by ourselves from scratch. Clearly, I am not looking for it with information already loaded related to specific schools. I am just looking for a template.

Thank you for your help.

As a “BassIIDad” (my son’s just started his senior year in high school as well) I, too, appreciate any template type responses here.

Thanks in advance (and for asking the question, BaritoneDad).

I can’t say that it’s entirely comprehensive, but I have my own spreadsheet that might be of use to you. I have all of the schools I’m applying to going down on the left, and then have a column for each of the following (in no specific order):

 • Application Type (Common App, Unified App, etc.)
 • Testing Requirements (SAT, ACT, subject tests)
 • Recommendations
 • Essays
 • Prescreening Repertoire
 • Application Fee
 • Application/Prescreening Deadline
 • Prospective Teachers
 • Audition Repertoire
 • Other Requirements (Resume, Repertoire List, etc.)

Granted, I left off some things that are sort of a given - like high school transcript and other things that my school sends out. It was also helpful for me to include direct links to the admissions section of each school’s website, so I can easily verify information if I need to. I have the spreadsheet on my computer as a Numbers document, but I can convert it to Excel (if you use Microsoft Office instead of iWork) and email to you - just PM me.

As my daughter is still a couple of years away from applying, I haven’t really put my spreadsheet to use, but in exploring various schools here is the information we are tracking right now:

School name
School website (and other links for music dept, strings dept)
Cost
Cello faculty
Prescreen reqs (material, format)
Audition reqs (material)
Application/audition dates
Recommendations needed for application

CC does not allow file uploads, so I can’t give you the spreadsheets that I made, but I can point you to the first dozen or so articles at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/258796-so-you-want-music-major-one-familys-experience.html</a> in which I list just about everything that was on them.

Ours were similar - I made a pared-down one with just teachers etc for D to go over with her private teacher and get recommendations for trial lessons.

The other column we added was scholarship info - merit aid. This one was especially useful as D also applied to LACs with music programs where there could be both academic and music money available.

We made two sets of spreadsheets. I’m thinking that you (OP) are looking for a list to keep track of applications. Ours was on paper (large graph paper from a desk blotter) that stayed on our dining room table all fall. It had a list of all the requirements with a place to mark off when done. Transcripts, SAT scores, regular application, music application (if separate), counselor rec, teacher rec, music teacher recs, audition date, etc.

Prior to application time, we also had another spreadsheet – this one WAS on the computer. It compared colleges, and was very different for each of our kids. For my D, it contained info such as size, cost, scholarship availability, SAT range, languages offered (her interest), and anything we found on the website that might give her an edge… such as the school that had the guest German instructor, or the school that had it’s own windmill (energy and ecology was one of her interests), or the school where the violin teacher studied at the Mozarteum (where her private teacher had also studied), or the school that needed string players.

For my middle son, who wanted a conservatory and didn’t care about location or size, his checklist included things like potential teachers, “Richard’s opinion” (his private teacher) or “orchestra quality”. For some schools, we also noted basic academic requirements, although that wasn’t too much of an issue.

What about this column for your speadsheet – one for passcodes and user names for applications. Once your child is get accepted you ma be given another set. You will also need columns for mailing addresses (one of the music school and one for the parent university) and columns for the names and phone number of the people with whom you have spoken. May remember others later.
