School "attire" in the North vs. the South

Is it just me or do people in the South at colleges dress up a lot more than people in the North. Up North, I could go to my high school in my PJ's if I wanted to and people just wore regular clothes (hoodie, shorts, t-shirt, flip flops if you wanted to). Here, there are tons of people in fraternities/sororities who wear a tie and jacket to class. Seems like people focus more on appearance here than in the North.

Is this true or do I not know what college is like in the North?

Actually its probably the dress code for the frats/sororities.

And its not true, lots of people at my school wear pj’s to class or a hoodie or something or other.

Well, I’m in NYC and it’s pretty rare to see anyone walking around in sweats and flip-flops.

If the weather was as nice in Michigan as it is in the South, I’d dress up, too. :P

This is truth. Most fraternities in the South require a dress code for their pledges.

well I go to college in the Northeast and most people dress casually here (jeans and a top) but i’ve never seen anyone wear pajamas to class and sweats are pretty rare outside the gym or dorm. some people do get dressed up (the business school kids are always in suits because they’re dashing off to internships) but the majority of students don’t. When I visited UVa I didn’t notice a significant difference, but that’s the only Southern college i’ve seen. Like everyone pointed out, it’s probably the dress code for the frats.

As the others have said, many frats/sororities have dress codes for pledges. What I notice more is that there is a different dominate style of clothing in the South compared to the North. Much of the clothing people wear at my school (South) is not very popular where I’m from (PNW) and vice-versa.

^I have that problem just between my school and my home 20 minutes from here. When I go home I look like a freak for wearing things you’d be a freak NOT to wear at school.

^ lol it’s funny how that works - my hometown is about 45mins-1 hour from my college, and there brands like vineyard vines are popular; it’s not weird at all to see a guy in pastel yellow pants covered with an embroidered whale, swordfish or crab pattern - basically kind of a waspish preppy vibe. Then I moved to NYC where people have more of an “artsy” look and it’s not weird to see people with purple hair.

My style didn’t really change though; jeans and a nice top with flats works all over the USA, i think.

Wait, you wore PJs to high school?

^people wear pajamas to both HS and college where i am in the northeast. personally, i find it lazy but whatever blows yer skirt up.

haha I didn’t wear PJ’s to school, I was just exaggerating a bit to say how casual we are in the north

well, i went to high school in nj and we all wore t-shirts and stuff. i live way down south now and polos, dress shirts, and ties are a lot more common…

south=preppier
north=casual

at my high school we wore pajamas and slippers.(not me) In college most of the girls are more dressed up. Its in the city but i feel no need to over dress for school. I just wear a t-shirt and a pair of jeans.

I mean, I went to both HS and college in Pennsylvania, and while I knew a few girls that would occasionally schlep to an early morning class in their PJs I don’t remember ever seeing it in high school. And I went to a pretty huge public school. Guess I can just chalk it up to “kids today.” :p

I would agree with this… My school has a fairly small greek scene and most people are fairly relaxed when it comes to how dressy they get on weekends and such. Mostly jeans, sweatshirts, and t-shirts. I find schools with bigger greek scenes > 30% tend to dress up a lot more. The girls will wear dresses a lot and guys will wear button up shirts. If schools in the South have more prominent greek life I would call this a big contributing factor.

I go to school in NJ and people generally wear a hoodie and shorts year round ;)

Its not correct to stereotype because you’ll find the difference you’re looking for, if you’re looking for one at all. :p

The northeastern schools in general are casual as hell. In my high school, every day about 30% of kids would come in wearing sweats or pj’s and flipflops, and nobody even thinks twice about how lame that is.

In LA you are always fresh
