How impressive is it if you achieved top marks in biology, chemistry, french, mathematics, social studies, and physics (basically all core subjects except english) at school? (are school awards even significant at all?)

i got one award on english last year...4people out of 450people...basically teacher recommended..

Thanks for your reply, but I wasn't interested what awards you got... I was interested in whether or not it is worth mentioning on an application.

Depends on the school. I see you live in Canada. I'll use Georgia Tech as my first example. They explicitly state that they don't care about such awards. Flat out. Don't put them.

U. North Carolina, on the other hand, does want you to put them down.

I still haven't answered your question though; you're asking how 'impressive' they are. I personally think they aren't that impressive. I was passed over last year for an award because "only one person can have an award per grade." In some cases, like dnduswo's example, it's not even based on GPA, it's just what the teacher thinks of you.

Regardless of prestige, put them down if they ask for it. Adcoms know that high school quality differs.

depends on the school, but all would be a good addition to an application

As far as I know, having the highest grade in something isn't an award. However, an award could be recognition from the Parent-Teacher-Student Association for Excellence in Mathematics. This would be an award, and I believe that it is significant.
