Good luck to all of you in the NW! I am from Oregon and remember only 3 times when I was a kid that school closed for more than a day. It was a real treat, except that we really didn’t have the proper clothes to wear to be out in it. Remember acrylic knit gloves?

For those in the Northeast, how is anyone staying warm, being without power for so long? I can’t imagine. Snuggle up with your families and have a cozy holiday season (if possible). :)

The 5th day without school has just begun. My daughter emailed a pdf of a Counselor supplement to her counselor, but will send a letter, email and call the college to make sure they understand the situation. I think if the common app and supplement apps are in on time, the school will be willing to wait a week or so for the rest. Mother nature and global warming are seriously messing with us.

Good luck to those on the east coast without power. It may come down to snail mail to get the applications in.

Karen Colleges–others might disagree but I would say that we have 2 weeks, usually in July, that are (for us) very hot and uncomfortable. It is a fact that not everyone here feels a need for air conditioning. And bugs are not a problem (gotta love that). We had a cabin years ago and did not even have screens. Winter–usually one good ice storm, different that what we have right now, which is colder than usual. The “black ice” is a pain and can stop the city but is generally short lived. My D mentioned that she remembers have 1 snow day her entire HS. The bad weather–airport wise–in not typically PDX but the transfer pt. such as Chicago. So–come on out–but do avoid the last 2 weeks of July possible. Just my thoughts…
moved here in 1979 and cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Do come out to the PNW. This stuff is very unusual. As for the weather in July-- it’s better than anywhere else in the country. It’s hard to believe, but we have very low humidity during the summer months.

It’s good here. The power’s on, and the temperature outside is in the 30’s. (I knew I was acclimated to Oregon after moving from Alaska when I whined bout 20-degree weather.)

Karen, our summers are the best! Truly. Low humidity, not too hot, it’s absolutely lovely. This winter is unusual so far. We haven’t had weather like this in 4-5 years. Usually we get a couple of days of slushy snow or ice.

My kids keep praying for a snow/cold day, but to no avail. It takes about a foot of snow to close Minnesota schools–and then only if it falls all in the same day.

If my D ends up at one of her California choices, she doesn’t get to come home for winter break, we’ll go visit her!

I’m sure summers are fabulous. That’s not the concern.

I’m not sure that we’ll want to look at schools where the Christmas flights might get delayed, causing D to miss the flight to Asia. I guess it would be okay if she originated at SeaTac.

Even if you fly out of “warm” places like Dallas or Atlanta, you risk delays. The planes have to get TO those cities from other cities and if there are problems in those, there are delays. There is no city where no delays are a guarantee.

California or Washington or Idaho are way better. Its getting crowded in Oregon, there’s a plan to bring highspeed rail from Eugene to Vancouver BC. Population density in the Valley, is as high as Ohio. We’ve had only 2 inches of snow, lowest evening temp is 20, since monday, and we have been shutdown ever since.

I remember going to Seattle and two years in a row when I was there new records were set for the highest temperature at the time and I thought it felt great out!

My daughter called the college today, and they told her to get the supplement in as soon as she could, so I think she will be fine if everything else gets there by the deadline.

We had a 3 week xmas break, but our school has a policy where you have to request transcripts 15 school days before they are due, so most people already had all their transcripts done by the time winter break rolled around. Personally I really like ED, it means that everything has been out of the way for a long time :-). Good luck on your child’s apps!
