Should I join a club before the school year ends or should I wait until 10th grade?

Most clubs aren't doing much right now (since it's either finals time, 2-or-3-weeks-to-finals time, or summer vacation), so you might as well wait until next year when the club cycle restarts.

Make sure you join clubs that match up well with your interests and what you want to do... don't join just because you want to impress admissions people. That really won't fly well. Join some clubs you have a passion for, and really work in them. That will give you the most to write about in essays that admissions people make you submit.

Do someTHING meaningful.

Someone? Lol...

As an example, my ECs... Track & Field, Cross Country (only if I join next year), National Honor Society, Relay for Life, volunteer as TA at local weekend Chinese School, Math Club (AMC/AIME), Chess Club, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Team.

Standard volunteer stuff, a little bit of athletic stuff. But the really strong emphasis is on FIRST robotics, which is my passion. I've been on it for four years and it's really shaped the direction I think I'm going to take in life. I've learned a lot from it and it's a great program, and is going to give me good material to talk about in my admissions essays.

Would it hurt me that I didn't participate in anything for the first year? I do have other extracurriculars though so...

If you have other extracurriculars I don't think it would matter if you joined clubs in 9th grade. Club leadership is more important than club membership.

I'm a freshman too, and I haven't joined any major club yet except for Model United Nations, which I dedicate nearly all my after-school free time to. I'm also planning to stick with MUN for the rest of my high school career. Be sure to do the same with your EC's. And it doesn't really matter if you haven't joined one yet; freshman year is not considered very important in admissions decisions anyway. But you most certainly should start getting involved in your sophomore year.

its probably a good idea to join freshman year, especially if you go to a relatively big school. You will be more likely to be given leadership positions later on, because these are often based on seniority.

lol @ "do someone meaningful"

and yeah, u really should join clubs freshman year :)

Debate is a good club

If you know what you want to major in, join a club that is similar to that major. If you don't know, join a club that you think you will like.

I'm planning on majoring in business/finance. What are some extracurricular activities that I can do to make me look good? BTW, my school is very small and provides minimal amount of clubs. We only have a handful of clubs right now. :/
