First A little Background info:
So I have a 3.6 GPA
i got an 1870 on my SAT's
1270 just Math And Reading.

Only applied to 4 schools.
I got Accepted into Miami Of Ohio, George Mason
Waitlisted at Virginia Tech.
Denied From Georgia Tech.

I want to study Computer Engineering and am deciding whether to commit to Mason Or Miami.
I live in Virginia so Mason would be much cheaper as well as closer to Home. I want a good education and was thinking about transferring to Virginia Tech after a year. How hard is it to Transfer from Mason to Tech? also what would be my advantages if I go to Miami?

What are my chances of getting a wait list acceptance into Virginia Tech?
Which school should i commit to for now?

Thanks.

There are no ‘chances’. Last year, almost every kid got off the wait list. The 3 years before that, no one got off the wait list.

According to the undergraduate admissions, anyone with a 3.0 is considered “competitive” to transfer from a 4 year university to Tech. However, this does not include engineering… I imagine the standards must be much higher. If you have a NOVA (communtiy college) close to you and you are entirely sure you want to go to Tech, I suggest asking about a contract. Currently I am set up with one where, if I get a 3.0 at NOVA, I will automatically be accepted into Tech for next year.

Thanks for the reply.
So which is a better engineering school, George Mason or Miami of Ohio?

To be perfectly honest I have never heard of Miami of Ohio.

^ Purpleque must not have heard of Ben Roethlisberger either.

Miami is not super well known for their engineering, but then I don’t remember hearing that about GM either. I would go to the less expensive one at this point and try to transfer. NOVA is a good choice as well.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to go with Mason for now and pray that I get into Tech through the waitlist.

Good luck on getting off the wait list Paul!

If I were you, I’d call or e-mail Tech to ask about what classes you should take at Mason. If your GPA is high enough and you take all the classes they want you to, maybe you could transfer in to the Engineering department. (Or always another major and attempt to switch in)

I’d ask them, though, about how long it would take you to complete this. Switching into engineering isn’t guaranteed and might set you back a year or so.
