Well....

I was wondering whether kids at boarding school kids ever get days off. that are not planned. Current boarding school kids feel free to gripe :)

Most of the schools we visited said that one or two times a term the head of school gives a surprise day off that is announced at Chapel.

A couple of the boarding schools we know of that have a significant day student population do on occassion have a snow day, but rarely. Most times, day students arrange to stay on campus if they know a storm is coming.

Unscheduled days off are very rare. Andover has head of school day during the winter term, but that's about it.
Many teachers do give "free cuts" occasionally, so you can have individual classes off. I have two free cuts today, and am already done with classes.

My son's school has two "surprise" days off. Snow days are extremely rare...maybe one every few years. My older son had one during his four years, my younger son did have one this year (we have had a harsh winter this year with another 9 inches expected today and tonight).

My D's school typically has one unscheduled day off in the winter term, usually a ski day. Unfortunately, this year's was used to head off a flu problem :( . Good news is that it seemed to work.

My D's scholl occasionally announces "headmaster's holidays". they have had two thus far. One yesterday and one early in the school year where the whole school goes to hike a mountain.

We have Mountain Day in the fall...nobody knows when it is and the seniors are told about it the night before. In the morning the seniors run around the other halls screaming and play music over the loudspeakers, announcing that it's Mountain Day. Big Sisters take their Little Sisters out to breakfast and then we have an all school meeting before boarding the buses to go to Jiminy Peak and go on the alpine slide and the other stuff there. We've also had 2 and a half snow days so far this year. :-)

wow arky, that sounds like so much fun!!!! what school is that?

We have one Principal's Day in the spring - a creatively announced (it varies every year) random day off...lovely!

Most schools have the 'headmaster's day,' either once or twice a year. At a few lucky schools, they have one per trimester.

You have to keep in mind though that on average, there are only about 150 days of school at boarding school. So you're really getting 6 weeks extra vacation that public school doesn't.

at madeira you have every wednesday off from classes!

Blair has Headmasters' Societies Week Blair Academy - News & Events . I think Friday is a full day off, but the entire week has a series of competitions with the school divided into 4 teams. After this week, there are exams and then a 3-week March break.

I went to Loomis and their campus is right next to a big river. My tourguide told me about one day about 4 years ago there was a "flood day" because they had so much rain that the river overflowed and 2 ft of water came up onto the campus grounds! I'm like "Woah. cool."

I didnt realize that there is only 150 days of school. how many days do public school have

180 days.
It has ALWAYS been 180 days for my school system. Ever since I started.

wow. thats a full month. but a public school can not let student live there. I wonder how many hours each school has.

My bs is 8-3:30, but I only have about 4-5 hours of classes a day.. But that's because I'm slacking in my second semester senior year.

I love my 9 free periods!

oh my god. 9 free periods. did you have none the last three years and saved them all.
