School diversity

does any1 know if it can be requested or it is released to the colleges? i have an extremely competitive school(20% asian) and it seemsthat due to this i may not be top 10% of class, but i am top 10% of my race

I think I must have written and deleted the sentence, “you are disgusting” three times just now.

Ultimately, I don’t agree with that sentiment, but what you’re saying in your post and especially the phrase, “…but i am top 10% of my race” does strike me very poorly.

I understand that you’re just some scared 16 year old worrying about your future, but watch the way you say things when you’re speaking in a public forum.

way to answer the question. and take it out of proportion

Top 10% of your race? Do you think you deserve a pat on the back or something? How the hell does race affect your academic performance? I think you just want an excuse.

^not performance, class rank. that was clearly stated

so are you saying that because ur not asian, ur class rank can’t be higher?

FAIL

I don’t think schools include the racial makeup of the school in the stuff they send to colleges. Definitely mention that you’re in the top 10% of your race on your apps, I’m sure colleges will take this into account.

ROFL THIS IS RIDICULOUS. wow.

lololololololol

Colleges always appreciate having qualified minority applicants, but since when did your race have anything to do with how well you do in school?

How do you know you top in your race? Does your school sub-rate? Like, top 10% overall, then top 10% in each category/race??? Who knows, perhaps someone your race, but with disabilities, is in a category above you…

I bet most of you who are jumping on collegebound1414 are huge fans of affirmative action, which is based on the variance in performances of different races.

Yeah, different races perform at different levels. This isn’t because of inherent ability, but rather cultural factors that affect performance level. Asians families tend to place a ton of weight on work ethic and academics, and that emphasis isn’t as common among others.

Still, blaming your performance on the prominence of Asians in your school is ****ing stupid.

schmaltz=win. ive seen one answer to the question

I’m not a fan of AA.

Not me, although I’m sure there are many who would commit such contradictory actions.

“Yeah, different races perform at different levels. This isn’t because of inherent ability, but rather cultural factors that affect performance level.”

Causes and effects are tricky things, and are sometimes very difficult to prove. I suppose you have some good evidence to prove this point. You know, a few decades ago people were saying the same thing about men and women, because it sounded nice. Then somebody did some real research and found significant differences between the way men and women think.

^well schmaltz be more specific who did the study? was there any bias? and what do u mean by performance? because intelligence and performance have different meanings depending on the culture you live in. And considering the fact that women are overrepresented in a lot of top colleges except the engineering ones—which could both be cultural and innate or neither. To be sincere there is really no real proof that there is a difference in intelligence between subgroups (if all factors are kept equal-which is impossible on its own). I doubt if anyone could present actual facts-like unbiased and a well researched data.

Anyways to the crux of the matter, i have a feeling i know were u are coming from- I am a science major too and lots of asians are in my class and they all except for one screw up the curve majorly. However, there is nothing u can do except do very well on the SATs and apply to a bunch of schools.

If you happen to have access to Jstor, you can read this: [JSTOR: An Error Occurred Setting Your User Cookie](A Model for Academic Success: The School and Home Environment of East Asian Students on JSTOR)

If you don’t, “Blink” is a pretty fun book that addresses several of the issues we’re discussing. The reason genetic ability is not a factor is because race is a concept constructed by humans; in other words, there is no biological basis for race. This is pretty much a fact that is accepted by the majority of scientists ([PAGE ONE – No Biological Basis For Race, Scientists Say / Distinctions prove to be skin deep](http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1998/02/23/MN94378.DTL) and that’s just the first result on google, I’m sure you can verify that if you want to). Males and females, on the other hand, have biological differences. The comparison between race and sex is bogus, in my opinion.

I’m NOT claiming I know that there are differnces in intelligence among the races. I don’t think it’s been proven one way or the other. But maxdel is clearly claiming that he knows for sure that there AREN’T differences. I’m interested in why he’s so certain.

In typical politically correct academia, maxdel would be considered the “open-minded” one, even though he makes a claim with no proof; while I would be considered a closed-minded Fascist, even though I’m the one making no claim one way or the other.
