School doesn't convert GPA to 4.0 scale...problem?

Is it a problem if my school doesn't convert my GPA to the usual 4.0 scale? Should I do that? How do I? Currently my weighted GPA is 105.something. I have no idea what it is unweighted.

Here's a conversion chart:

http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/advSearch/GPAConversionWindow.asp

When you fill out applications normally there's a space where you can indicate if your GPA is weighted or not.

No- the university will convert it when going through your file.

this is stupid. i hate how some schools give out letter grades and don't even have +'s or -'s. So if you get an 90 in the class at one school that is on the 4.0 scale, you would have a 4.0 GPA. if you got a 90 at any other school, it would be 3.5...:-/

Its stupid, but thats why Elite universities know that and are going to take their grades with more suspicion.

Is that GPA calculator what you do after you find out what your avg out of a 100 is or do you first convert each grade to that and then avg them together?

Johnson81 has the right idea. Most schools will just go through your transcript and calculate your GPA according to their system.

FYI - if you're converting your grades do not convert your overall average ... do it grade by grade.

Here are two students with an overall 92% average and their final grades for 5 courses with very different GPAs ...

92 Avg #1 = 92, 92, 92, 92, 92 = A, A, A, A, A = 4.0 GPA

92 Avg #2 = 96, 88, 96, 88, 92 = A, B, A, B, A = 3.6 GPA

From Columbia's website. Lots others - most DO NOT convert by grades the way students seem to think they do on here:

From Columbia's website for International students:

My course grades on my undergraduate transcript are based on a different scale from Columbia’s. What can I do?

You need to get your transcript officially converted to the GPA scale by an appropriate agency (GPA is on a 0-4 scale) before submitting it. It is your responsibility to complete this conversion and the C.S. Dept. does not provide recommendations of which agency to use. For the online application, you can enter an approximate conversion of your percentage grade. A guide is given below:

Grade Grade Point

Approximate % Equivalent
A+ 4.0 90-100
A 4.0 85-89
A- 3.7 80-84
B+ 3.3 77-79
B 3.0 73-76
B- 2.7 70-72
C+ 2.3 67-69
C 2.0 63-66
C- 1.7 60-62
D+ 1.3 57-59
D 1.0 53-56
D- 0.7 50-52
