I was just kind of curious to see what colleges CC think is the best for prospective writers. I don't really mean a school with good english because i am not interested in analyzing literature as much as actually creating it. What places have the best environment to get students to think like writers. All sorts of writing is good ie film, play, creative writing, journalism, etc. Thank you so much

NYU Tisch is great for creative writing…

I think any strong English program would work. The reality is that good writers pop up from all over the place. However, if you are looking for a “ranked” program, do a google search on MFA writing programs. I know that is graduate level, but one can somewhat assume if the graduate program is doing well, it will be supportive in the undergraduate level as well.

I am also curious what your definition of “thinking like a writer” might be, since there are so many ways to write and so many styles to write in. Also, a common piece of advice for writers is that good writers read a lot, so I think that a strong English literature program that gets students reading and analyzing is more valuable than you are giving it credit. However, if English Literature is not your thing, be sure to read a lot - and experience life a lot. Most 20somethings don’t have much to say because they haven’t lived long enough to have something meaningful to share. Travel, throw yourself into unique situations, dive deeply into philosophy, politics, religion, war, love, culture, music, poverty, riches, etc. A college experience will only help develop you into a good writer in so much as it challenges you and expands your world view.

Annika

LSU has a really excellent journalism program

sarah lawrence has an excellent writing program, or so i’ve heard. its whole curriculum is based on writing. From my understanding, there are no tests; just essays, even if you’re a biochem major. columbia also has a good writing program. and carnegie mellon, surprisingly so (I thought they just built robots

and syracuse’s newhouse school of pub communications is apparently very good for journalism.

I think just about every liberal arts school would have a good-decent writing program, though.

I had two AMAZING teachers in HS who both went to UChicago and can never stop talking about how great it is, lol-- check there
