I have a question. My school puts 1st Semester, 2nd Semester, and Final Grades on our transcript. My problem is that what if they see the upward trend from 1st Semster to 2nd Semester but Final Grade still comes out to an 88 or something how do they(Ivies, Stanford, UChicago) view that? BTW, how many B's are too many? What grades(fr. soph jr. sn) count when they view your transcript? Any advice will do.

Any advice will do

There may be no answers yet because it is a hard question to answer. Colleges do like to see an upward trend. But there is no hard and fast rule about how many B's you can have for a given college. So much depends on the rest of your application--SAT scores, interview (if there is one), essay, EC's, recommendations. The overall package is more important than the individual parts.

I am grateful that the schools where my kids went sent sanitized transcripts to colleges. They did not see the failed exams, D's and C's which speckled my boys' reports.

Our school does much the same as Jamimom's. The only grades that are recorded on the transcript are the final grades for a course. GPA and class rank are computed ONLY at the end of the year for 9, 10 and 11th grades. Final class rank is computed midyear for seniors (and yes...that means that someone "could" end up doing better and not be the val or sal....but those are the "rules"). Even with that, the mid year grades are NOT recorded on the transcript. College requiring midyear marks are sent the senior report card which is sealed by the school registrar.

I believe that the transcript that goes out to colleges from our school and the one that goes to the student's parents are different. The latter lists every quarter's grade. The transcript that gets sent to colleges lists only yearly grades. In senior year, afirst quarter(for ED/EA) or first semester (for RD) transcript is sent to colleges. I'm told class rank is computed only at the end of junior year.

If your highschool is sending out every quarterly grade, midterms, effort ratings, it is putting a number of its kids unnecessarily to a disadvantage. You may want to talk to them about that and try to effect a change, though it would not affect you.
