So, I'm looking at the placement testing website because I just signed up... and it says:

"All School of Arts and Sciences students registered for testing must complete the Foreign Language testing immediately after the Level 2 math testing; the test day will end at 3:30 pm."

WHAAAT? The test day starts at 8:15, and from what I've heard, the testing shouldn't be that rigorous... Does this mean as a SAS student I'm required to decide on a language I want to take now and test on it right then?

This comes as a shock to me as I hadn't even thought that SAS students would need to take a language. Hopefully, I don't have to take a language, as I'm taking Latin in high school now and I really don't enjoy it, so I would probably have to start off at spanish 101 or something... a bit embarrassing.

They strongly advise you to take the language portion so that if you decide later to take a language, that will already be done. If you don’t take it, and then want to take a language course, you will not be able to until you complete the placement test, which is only offered at certain times.

My son did not take the language portion. He just left after the math portion was finished.

If you took 2 years of a foreign language in HS, then SAS does not have a additional requirement – but some individual majors/programs may require it.

If you did not take it in HS, then you need 1 year at a college level.

As near as I can tell, placement exams are mainly for -

International students who had English as a foreign language (so they can claim proficiency in their home tongue)

Bilingual students who did not take a foreign language in HS

Students in a program which requires a foreign language.
