School of Cinematic Arts

So I'm applying to USC this fall and I'm really interested in the SCA. Out of the programs offered, I'm most interested in Critical Studies, Production, and Writing. However, the application only lets you pick two programs to apply for. I know I want to apply for Production as my first choice but I'm unsure about Critical Studies or Writing for my second choice. As a film student I want to focus on writing and cinematography. Which program would be better for me? Would Writing allow me to explore other areas of film or would I be mostly restricted to writing scripts?

Also, how many students does each program typically take per year?

Oh, if there’s anyone on CC that got into SCA – would you be willing to share your stats and what programs you applied/were accepted to? And why you think you got in?

Production and Critical Studies are two tracks within the same major, so that means you get the same degree regardless of which you are in. There’s some overlap in course requirements for the 2. My son is in CS, even though his primary interest is in cinematography. He knew he had a better chance of getting into CS than Production, since he had very little film experience compared to a lot of applicants. He had thought he might try to transfer to Production sophomore year, but has decided he’s very happy with the Critical Studies major. He’s able to take production classes, so he feels he’s getting the best of both worlds.

That said, I know very little about the writing program. I get the impression it’s pretty all-consuming, so it makes me wonder whether a student would be able to do much exploration of other areas of interest.

Try searching this forum for the numbers of admits - I know someone posted that during the last admissions cycle. IIRC, CS takes about 75 freshmen.
