School of Communication: Mass Communication & Advertising

I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about the comm majors, like coursework, what you plan to do with the major after college
I was looking at Mass Communications, Advertising & Public Relations-is this one major or do you choose to concentrate in one area of it?

I’m interested in a future working with a art department in a magazine, what do you think would be a good path for me in this school?

Mass Com, Advertising and PR are all separate majors. They just have some similar classes, which is why they’re grouped together.

As a freshman and sophomore you will be taking 1 COM class per semester and the other 3 classes you will be taking each semester will be to fulfill your liberal arts requirements. You can look at the liberal arts requirements guide here: http://www.bu.edu/com/files/2009/12/foundation_requirements1.pdf</a>
You can take classes that are not on that sheet. The sheet is simply a guide. My biggest suggestion: use rate my professors and choose your class by level of easiness and not necessarily interest (unless it’s something you want to minor in or you are reallly passionate about).

Then Junior and Senior year you pretty much take classes to fulfill requirements for your major and minor/concentration. So basically COM and minor/concentration (usually CAS) classes.
The guide for junior/senior year is = http://www.bu.edu/com/files/2009/12/mcadpr_curicguide_feb1320121.pdf</a></p>

And junior year most COM students study abroad.

Thanks for the info! I’m actually a transfer applicant though so I’ll be a junior in the fall. Hopefully all my credits will transfer and I’ll be done with the core requirements already. I’m especially interested in visual communications but I would like to study advertising since I think it fulfills that. Do you have any feedback on that program?

I do! I’m an advertising student now.
Basically, you have to take a few required ad courses, such as: intro to advertising, communication theories, mass comm. research. you also have to take fundamentals of creative development.
Within the Advertising major, most people choose if they are looking to study Account Management/Services, etc or Art Direction/Creative. Since you’'re into visual communications, you’d probably go into Art Direction. BU offers courses like Design and New Media (designing using photoshop, illustrator, etc), Design and New Media II, Art Direction, Development for a Portfolio, etc. The first course in the creative direction that you’ll probably take is Fundamentals of Creative Development, where you learn the basics of creative strategy and make your own campaigns. You’ll definitely get a ton of experience through classes alone! I like the program so far.

wow the information you just told me about are direction makes me even more interested in BU! I was looking at WashU and UDel for their visual communications programs but I like BU because it seems I would be able to study visual comm without having to only receive a BFA. Do you think I’ll be behind since I’m entering as a junior?

Heard that Communication related major requires a lot of writing task… I am wondering how essential is one’s writing abilities in BU. Since I heard from a student that BU’s communication focus more on multimedia application than simple writing?? Hmm…

I don’t think you’ll be behind! Many students begin taking their core Ad courses in junior year. I would check with COM to see what credits they will take and how your schedule would work, though.

Thanks! Have you met any transfers there? I’m also just nervous about meeting people in general since I’m already so settled at my current school and I’ve seen firsthand how reluctant upperclassmen can be to meet new people.

How’s the job prospect for students who major in Comm? I was looking for info on their site but couldn’t find anything.
