School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Hey guys,
I have a question about applying to Princeton which hopefully someone from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences there can answer.

First off, does the school of engineering and applied sciences have any preferences when it comes to race, socioeconomic background, location of high school, etc? Your take on this please.

There are so few engineering students at Princeton as compared to some other schools. Does this reflect a bias against the science-oriented (in terms of classes and EC) student?

I'm a Asian male student at a top high school in california but my extracurricculars are really highly oriented towards chess (i.e.President of club, led team for 3 years, got second place at states every year, organized tournaments, volunteered at elementary schools for chess, etc) and science competitions (I placed really high on several competitions), do you think I would be at any disadvantage in applying as due to my ethnicity, gender, or the activities I have done as compared to maybe some of the girls who are presidents of the debate club, school newspaper, etc -type of students?

Thank you so much in advance.

I’m numbering my answers in the order you asked the questions:

Princeton practices AA, which means that underrepresented minorities like blacks and Hispanics get a boost. Asians are not underrepresented. Princeton also values geographic and socioeconomic diversity.

No

No but girls do get a bump if they say they apply to SEAS.

If I were you I would relax a bit. Your questions make you sound like the next Jian Li. As I said above, Princeton values diversity, but that doesn’t mean that stereotypical Asian students like yourself don’t get admitted in healthy numbers.

urg, sorry about that, its just that the stuff I see online has not been too good on the diversity count for Princeton.
