For those of you currently in BU, what is your opinion of the School of Management?

I would say that the school is definitely underrated but it's also not amazing or anything. I'm currently a sophomore and would say the curriculum is solid and the courses are well designed. The main emphasis is on teamwork (basically teams in every course). My only gripe is that some of the students....., well lets just say you wouldn't want them on your teams. You get a lot of CGS kids in mid-level classes and have some students that are either just plain dumb or do not try at all. In SMG's defense though, you probably have the latter type of kids at every university. Overall, it's a pretty good school, not great, but not horrible either. I think US News ranks the undergraduate program in the 40s when it is easily at least a 20-30s school. Then again I'm a little bias, haha. One thing I've noticed though, which I really like, is that SMG kids have a lot of pride within the BU community. We have the nicest building on campus and believe we're some of the smartest kids on campus.

Let me know if you want to know anything more specific.

Well I was planning to make a new thread about this but I found one instead! Soooo, I’m just going to take the offer given to lalalaland and ask you a question if you don’t mind odin. How’s the workload at BU for SMG and the professors? I really dislike teachers that give you work and don’t even go over it kind of thing. I’m hoping for engaging interesting conversations and not just your typical “read the book, test next week” kind of class. I’d love to get more opinions from any other SMG students as well. :]

Thanks in advanced

lalalaland- thanks for starting this thread

for the above two posts - if you dont mind, would you share your stats when you got accepted to SMG. I plan to apply next year

Thanks

Well halopower015, I was on the waitlist for BU but then I got accepted so I’m not sure how much my stats will count but here’s my 2 cents.

GPA UW: ~3.5 W:~3.8-3.9
2000 SAT M:720 R:590 W:690
SAT2’s: Bio 720
MathllC: 650
Spanish: 650

EC’s: not bad I hope. Eagle Scout. Leader for a club here and there. Tennis team for 3 years. Community services. You know the works. :P

APs: Bio, Calc AB, Stats, Spanish

Top 20%ish of class

Hope that helps. This year was pretty weird because of the economy and such so hopefully it’ll be easier next year. I got pretty lucky since I was on the waitlist. (and if i wasn’t don’t kill my moment :)

Alectricity, it really depends on the class. There are a good number of classes where there isn’t going to be a lot of discussion (such as accounting and stats). For those classes, you pretty much go to class, listen to the prof lecture, and take exams. Then again, I don’t know what kind of discussion you would have in those classes. Your freshmen year you take a kind of intro to business class called management as a system, this class I think is a great combination of learning technical business material and discussion. Your sophomore year you’ll take organization behavior and intro to law, these two classes involve a lot of discussion and can be very engaging (they were for me). As for the professors, some are great, some aren’t. Workload is manageable. It really depends on the person. I’ll be a rising jnr and in CORE which is supposedly the hardest semester, so we’ll see how that goes.

These were my stats when I got in:
SAT- M-710, R-710, W-660
SAT IIs- Chem- 700, World History- 730, US History- 760
GPA- 95W, Top 11%
APs- Psych, Macroecon, USH- 5s, Chem, Stat- 4s

ooo very helpful and informative! Sounds exciting! Thanks for the response odin. Best of luck in junior year. It’s high school all over again huh? :P

smg is pretty great, i’m a rising junior for fall 2009 CORE like odin
maybe i’ve seen you around? haha

anyways, there are a lot of kids in smg that complain about the workload in smg and how it’s on par with engineering and premed kids, which i don’t understand at all because i don’t study until finals and i still do pretty decently (i think i’m averaging around a 3.4-3.5 gpa atm? smg avg is a 3.0). i usually go to all the classes and do the assigned homework sets though, so maybe that’s why lol… make sure you do that! but yeah everyone in smg basically thinks we’re the bomb because our building is by far the nicest, we have a hugeass globe in our foyer and like antique carpets on our walls LOL, we have our own starbucks and breadwinners, the nicest library on campus (imo), free print quota, our gold ballroom on the top floor and our career center has a 90%+ placement rate.

i think the courses so far are pretty interesting for the most part, i’m a more quantitative person so accounting, stats and such were okay for me, but if you aren’t a math person you might have to work a lil harder. the freshman SMG course is definitely great, it basically covers a few weeks of everything - accounting, ob, marketing, finance, operations management, alotta teamwork etc… you do two team semester wide projects following the stock market and comparing companies. but it’s nice you get to take courses with students in the other schools too (you’ll prob take WR100/150, EC101/102, and CAS electives frosh year). CORE is rumored to be destructive to your social life and terrible, but we’ll see. i’m in morning CORE too so 8-12PM everyday, meh!

if you ever need help picking professors / any help at all, feel free to send me a msg =p

oh CORE does NOT sound fun LOL hopefully i’ll be so engaged into the classes that the workload won’t affect me hahah
