I have an interest in math and economics. I probably do not have the credentials to get into SOM but could probably get into Harpur. Are there any disadvatages in majoring in math or economics in Harpur rather than majoring in finance in SOM? Thanks!

If you want more of an academic career or you’re certain you’ll go on to grad school, Harpur is fine.

If you want to go straight into business, I would recommend SOM because it is more pre-professional oriented, and will have more recruiting opportunities etc.

If you think you won’t get into SOM, apply to Harpur. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it.

You could always try to transfer INTO SOM after you’re here, but it’s very difficult, or so I’ve heard.

math majors who are well versed in economics and business are in high demand at many fincancial services firms. Most math majors want to teach so business firms pay out at @$$ to get mathemeticians. A double major in econ and math will sevre you well in applying to jobs and grad school, try minoring in business if you wanna round it out and make finding a job a cinch after college.

If you do that, involve yourself in clubs like finance society or Alpha Kappa Psi (business fraternity, open to all majors though) you will find a job easily after school and get into a phenononal grad school.

Thanks def454. That was very helpful!

By all means try for SOM because the degree is just more valuble to potential employers. If you are in SOM you can pretty much take most Harpur classes but it doesn’t work the other way around. If you don’t get into SOM you can major in Financial Economics which is a weird hybrid of Econ and a few SOM classes. It is pretty much impossible to transfer internally from Harpur to SOM but I don’t know about Watson or Decker.
If you are dead set on going to grad school you could attend Harpur but, honestly. you will find better undergraduate research opportunities elsewhere.

I am majoring in math, econ, finance.

Just do well in all your classes. Get a 4.0

apply to the zurach scholars program if you in harpur your sophomre (fall) then you have the ability to take all SOM classes

the only classes in SOM that arent a complete waste of time are the Finance and accounting classes.

the rest mean nothing.

math was hard, econ was medium, finance was the easiest.

so is that mean if you are in Harpur, you still get to major in finance?
