school of undergraduate studies

Can anyone offer any info/feedback on UT's School of Undergraduate Studies? D2 is very interested in UT but unsure of major. That's a bit of a penalty since UT's honors programs are so specialized compared to the other schools she's applying to. So she was thinking about going this route. Any guesses on how hard it would be to transfer from this program into another? What about entering an honors program as of sophomore? Thanks.

Easy to transfer into College of Liberal Arts or College of Natural Sciences, but if the majors she is considering are in one of these two schools, why not just start out in one of her potential majors in one of these two schools? Easy to transfer between them if she changes her mind.

My opinion:
It is good for a freshman to be in a small program within the big UT. An honors program, marching band, a residential FIG. I think the School of Undergraduate Studies would be fine for someone who had a smaller program but I don’t know if this school offers small programs.

Does D2 have any smaller programs in mind?

MidwestMom2Kids you make a very good point and that was my original advice to D2. Go for a major then change if you change your mind. What troubles me just a bit is that her interests play across several school boundaries–like finance to biology to engineering. But lately, as she’s done more reading/exploring, she thinks she’s interested in psychology–especially where the field intersects with biology. Great! Even this interest covers two schools, though I bet these programs would work together for someone pursuing this area. (Neurobiology or Biopsychology etc.) So I’m wondering if she would be better listing Psch or Bio as major and then fine-tuning later? That way she would at least have a smaller honors group to target.

She’s hoping for PLAN II but I don’t think she’s quiet competitive enough there from what I hear. She’s OOS and 2 in a small class. 4.35 weighted. Hardest classes you can take at our small, Catholic High Shcool. National merit semi-finalist. (Should make finalist.) Strong volunteer and EC’s. Odd mix like cello and captain of basketball team, but her weak point is her SAT’s–only 2160 if she doesn’t come up from Oct. test. So I’m thinking Liberal Arts Honors or the Dean’s Science Honors might be the way to go for her, but am I off base here? Thanks so much.
