School Recommendations

Does anyone have school recommendations for excellent MT programs? As you will see from my list, I’m definitely applying to some conservatories, but I would like to include colleges that are not conservatories as well. For reference, I’m from CT and I do not wish to travel far.

I am applying to: Emerson, NYU Tisch. WCSU, Ithaca, Hofstra, AMDA, UHart

SUNY-Purchase? Muhlenberg? I’m less familiar with it, but maybe Pace (NYC)?

That was speedy! Thank you :slight_smile:

I don’t believe that SUNY Purchase offers MT. When S17 was applying for tech programs, he took Purchase off the list because he wanted to be in a program that would allow him to work with musicals, as well as straight plays, and Purchase wasn’t that school. He is at SUNY Fredonia, which might be too far from Connecticut. It’s about 8 hours from me and I am in NYS. Fredonia does have an MT BFA program and I have seen some extremely talented performers in the plays I have seen. Also, Acting and non-theater majors are also allowed to audition for all productions and my son says non-majors do get cast on occasion.

There’s also LIU-Post, which has a BFA MT, as well as the Molloy-CAP 21 program and Adelphi, all of which are near Hofstra, but in much nicer neighborhoods. Hofstra is in a horrible location. I live in the area and wouldn’t let any of my kids apply there.

In NYC, there’s Marymount Manhattan, but I am not sure what type of programs it has.

You also need to take your finances into account. Since you are in Ct., you should see if any of the state schools offers a program you would be interested in.

Good luck.

This has programs by state: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/801037-big-list-of-mt-colleges-by-state.html#latest

Add Boston Conservatory, Wagner College, Manhattan School of Music.

@techmom99: Thank you for the information regarding Purchase. I recommended them based on their acting program, not quite realizing their dearth of (or absence of) MT opportunities.

@merc81 -

I didn’t realize it, either, until my son applied for the BFA tech program at Purchase. When he began exploring the offerings, he realized there was no MT and didn’t move forward with his application. So many of these schools offer programs that differ in significant ways and it’s hard to sift through them all.

Marymount Manhattan has an MT minor that includes all the dance and singing classes, and is combined with the BA in Acting to create the equivalent of an MT major.

How far is too far? Rider is in New Jersey. Also Montclair State.

URI has a BFA in Theatre with an option for a music minor

Try Western CT - they have a newer BFA in MT that I have heard wonderful things about & my daughter is applying there this year. Should be close to home for you too! Good luck
