I was accepted RD and I am pretty much set on Tufts. However I hear mixed comments about Tuft's school spirit. Do a lot of kids show up to the sports games? Do people get excited about them? Does it play a role in Tuft's social/party scene?

I get excited about Tufts Men’s Soccer!!! It’s what you make it!

Tufts has lots of school spirit, in that the students love their school and are proud to be Jumbos! But if by “school spirit”, you envision some campus where the highlight of the week is the big football game and everyone runs around in school colors chanting the school song, and they pack 40,000 screaming people into some stadium - then this is not the place you’re looking for
And jocks are not on a pedestal at Tufts.
That’s why I love it!

I ttink that BeanTownGirl has provided an accurate representation of Tufts. Students are happy and generally pleased about being at Tufts, but the traditional school spirit found at some of its peer schools (Duke, Georgetown, etc.) is lacking.

We have more school spirit for our a cappella groups and Quidditch than for our varsity sports teams. But in the past year there have been increased efforts to attract people to sporting events, especially as some of our teams continue to get better and better. The ones I went to were packed with students and very well-received. Personally, I was always one of those people who wanted to go to sporting events but just needed an extra nudge, so encourage people to go with you! It’s also not as if you won’t know people on the teams. The opportunities are there if you want them and some people definitely do go regularly.

With regards to the party scene, in my experience athletes are more represented in fraternities than on the rest of campus. There’s a mix though and there are many, MANY fraternity brothers who are not on sports teams. I agree that athletes aren’t really put on any sort of pedestal though.

Tufts school spirit is not manifested in its sports as of yet. We’ve begun a campaign this year to help boost enthusiasm for school spirit and our sports, and it seems to have made good opening strides.
