School Spirit In ALL Sports

One sport school--and that is not so hot anymore.

The list has UMiami as 17th. It's a tiny private school with a fickle fan base. You're telling me that it's a 'sports' school more so than Florida State? They don't even have a football stadium. Every time there's a football game thousands and thousands of fans travel to Tallahassee for the games. It's a lot more difficult than driving to Gainesville, for example.

FSU's got baseball that's been to the CWS more times than I can remember, football that's won national championships and was the dynasty team of the 90s, track - just won the nat'l championship, great women's sports like soccer that is competing for the Women's College Cup and on and on.

'One sport school' - that's a joke.

btw that list from 'wolves is from 2003...

There are maybe four major college sports that draw over 1000 per game--football, m and w basketball, and ice hockey. That's it. Outside of football FSU is not know for any of them.

Maybe where you are located, but in Tallahassee:

Basketball
Baseball
Soccer
Volleyball
Football
Track
Tennis

All draw over 1K in fans easily. Ice hockey? Nope, not at FSU. Even when the football team's fairly weak some 80,000+ still drive to see them.

If SPORTS is a big reason that you're applying to a school, you might want to just slash most of your schools except Indiana and Arizona State.

If you're actually looking at a school because of its ACADEMICS (the main reason that people go to college), then UCSB, USD, and Pepperdine, are all good choices. Sports prestige shouldn't be your main reason for choosing a school.

It isn't my main reason, but it is one of the factors I'm considering.

This is my list as of right now.

Miami

UCSB

SDSU

Colorado

Indiana

ASU

And Pepperdine and USD may be to small for me, but I don't know.

Actually, once you get off this message board, and you actually talk to people who aren't ivy-bound prestige whores, MANY students choose their college with relation to the sports teams.

WestCoast101 - My main reason is social life, and then sports, and then atmosphere, campus, student body, and weather.

And then as long as they have my major I'm good.

And "academics" is nowhere on your list? Interesting....

All of my schools are great academic wise, so I don't think the highest ranked school should decide where I go.

SoCal, I love where your head is at.

Wolves - you're spot on too...except for your lists (which I know you're just the messenger of)

Everyone is so caught up in prestige on this website, but prestige really has little bearing on how much you'll enjoy college and how much success you'll have. Being happy leads to more productivity, which leads to success. And SoCal, you've identified the things that are important to you, that will make you enjoy the college of your choosing that much more. You're really focused on the "fit" which is refreshing.

I wish you the best of luck in choosing a college.

Wake Forest has insanely good sports and competes in the best Athletic conference in the country: the ACC
Currently we have 3 top 3 teams in the country: Men;s Soccer, Women's Soccer, and Field Hockey. Football is top 20, and Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Women's Tennis, and Women's Track are all top 25. Last year Baseball was top 25. Basketball is not top 25 ATM, but we have an extremely young team. This is even more impressive when you consider Wake is the 3rd smallest D-1 school.

"the best Athletic conference in the country: the ACC"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

OK, this is not about attendance at all sports, but schools that have a reputation for strong school spirit which carries on long after graduation are Michigan, Notre Dame, and Syracuse.

As for attendance, Michigan has one of the largest football stadiums, tickets are impossible to get for ND, and Syracuse has the largest basketball arena.

Of all the schools I've visited, I've noticed that the 2 schools that have the most T-shirt shops near campus are Michigan and Syracuse. And of course, ND shirts are available everywhere. Maybe this is some sort of metric. ;)

Big Ten/ACC Challenge:
Acc 4 wins
Big Ten 2 wins

Teams who can go to bowls?
ACC 8
Big Ten 7

Exactly.

^ Nice. ;)

Teams going to top bowls? Big 10-3
ACC-1 probably

right, but football isnt exactly ALL sports!

First off, no one here stated that the Big Ten was better than the ACC. So why are you arguing a point that wasn't made?

Second off, since when is the number of bowl tie-ins relavent to how good a conference is at football? Wouldn't something like computer generated conference rankings be more accurate? Or maybe i'm clueless, I don't know. Enlighten me.

By the way, here are the the conference rankings generated by computers, maybe you could use these instead of useless bowl births to educated yourself and make a proper decision:

1) SEC
2) PAC 10
3) Big East
4) Big Ten
5) ACC
6) Big 12
<a href="http://www.colleyrankings.com/curconf.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.colleyrankings.com/curconf.html</a>
1) Big East
2) SEC
3) Big Ten
4) Pac 10
5) Big 12
6) ACC
<a href="http://www.mratings.com/rate.php?lg=cf#conf%5B/url%5D">http://www.mratings.com/rate.php?lg=cf#conf</a>
1) Pac 10
2) SEC
3) Big East
4) Big Ten
5) ACC
6) Big 12
<a href="http://www.andersonsports.com/football/ACF_frnk.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.andersonsports.com/football/ACF_frnk.html</a>
1) Pac 10
2) SEC
3) Big East
4) Big Ten
5) Big 12
6) ACC

Now, if you want to find the best conference for sports, combine with the basketball conference rankings and average out.

<a href="http://kiva.net/%7Ejsagarin/sports/cbsend.htm%5B/url%5D">http://kiva.net/~jsagarin/sports/cbsend.htm</a></p>

Then you get the conference rankings:
1) Big East
2) PAC 10
t3) Big Ten
t3) ACC
5) SEC
6) Big 12

Actually, in terms of overall sports, the Big 10 is indeed slightly better than the ACC. If you look at the Director's Cup and standings, since it started back in 1993, an average of 5 Big 10 athletic programs have been ranked among the top 25 annually compared to an average of 3 ACC programs.
