School Spirit

In various reviews I've read, it said that the school spirit at Northeastern is very low, and not very many people attend the sporting events. Current NEU students- how true is this? I love hockey and am looking forward to going to games in college, but I hope other people there share my love for the sport and go to the games. How much school spirit and attendance at sports games are there really?

If you define school spirit solely based on intercollegiate athletics, then Northeastern would rank low. This is true of colleges in New England in general. There is good attendance, however, at many athletic events, especially hockey games. (Hopefully in the near future NU will win the men’s Beanpot again.)

You may want to look at the Athletics website:

At some schools an overemphasis on athletics can cause problems. Penn State comes to mind.

Hopefully a current student will post about NU’s school spirit as more broadly defined.

My son is a freshmen this year and has been to a few games so far and had a blast. He tried to get a ticket to the BC game and was not able to. The tickets sold out instantly.

It depends on the sport, if you’re talking about school enthusiasm. Men’s hockey has traditionally been the most well attended, and the Dog House (the student section) can be kind of crazy. Last year the basketball team also did really well, so attendance was really high by the end as well. We are not talking Penn State/Big 10 levels of sports insanity, but I don’t think I’d personally be a big fan of that. I think it’s a good compromise between having strong athletics and enthusiastic fans without completely idolizing sports over academics.

Hockey is the biggest sport here, as nano said. But NEU is in Boston- there’s more than just school spirit to be had. This year the Red Sox won the World Series- Northeastern students went wild and we all loved it. When I was at NEU during orientation, many people were in Curry Student Center watching the Bruins game. So it really depends on whether or not that’s something you’d be interested in.
