School Sport vs. Independent Sport

First off, do technical schools (MIT, Caltech, other "IT"s) even care if you do sports?

Second, if I were to run every day after school instead of going to soccer practice, would it count as a sport? ... and therefore an EC? And I mean 6 to 10 miles, maybe more. It's more than I would ever have to run at soccer practice, but it takes half the time. I do Cross Country as well, so I don't know if not doing soccer my junior and senior year even matters... but I want as much help as I can get.

Third, would IT schools care if I was a varsity cross country runner and we placed third or fourth at state?

I think it is a great EC, especially for a tech school. Obviously not weighted as much as your grades, but it will bring diversity. I would also place Cross Country and running as a hobby into the same category.

I really don't know how they would consider cross country, but to me, it is different than most of the Cal Tech or MIT candidates, which is always good.
