Hi everyone. I’m an incoming freshman to UC Davis, and I just noticed that the fall quarter starts so late compared to other colleges (October 2 I think). Unless there’s some summer class I need to take, my summer break will be hecka long (yes!). So, just out of curiosity, why does UC Davis start so late?

All the UCs are starting late because of a Jewish holiday this year that happens to fall on the weekend that freshmen usually move into the dorms. The administration didn’t want move-in weekend to overlap with the Jewish holiday.

http://www.theaggie.org/2014/01/09/uc-policy-change-results-in-shorter-winter-break-for-2014-15-school-year/

So it’s just this year? When should the UCs normally start, late September I guess?

Last year UC Davis started a week earlier. Also notice the Winter break is only 2 weeks instead of 3 due to the late start.

I can live with that. My high school winter break was also 2 weeks, so I’m not missing out on much. I’m just feeling really pumped because if I were still in high school I’d have to go back August 16, leaving me with about 2 1/2 months of summer. So, late start or not, my summer will be a whole month and a half longer this year (4 months!), and that means more time to do over-the-summer reading and to enjoy myself.
Does school usually get out around early June too (it’s June 11 this year I think, but because of the late start I guess June 4 usually)? If so, I’m really looking forward to the longer summer breaks at Davis! LOL I’m still acting like an elementary school student but when your school district seems to constantly shorten summer break it feels good to have a longer one for a change.

According to this, finals end on June 11 for spring quarter 2015.

This year, the last day of finals is June 12.

So no, school doesn’t get out a week earlier.

@sopranokitty that’s OK too, that’s still 3 whole months! You can obviously tell I haven’t much homework with regards to the school academic calendar :-).
