school suggestions for average engineering student

my son is a junior who is in advanced math and "1" level science classes. his school doesn't weight honors or ap classes, nor does it rank. it does have an excellent reputation in the northeast.

he had a 3.0 gpa for freshman and sophmore years and is currently running a 3.4, unweighted, in his junior year. he has taken all engineering electives in which he has gotten As or B+s. next year he is taking AP physics, calc and stats.

first pass on the sats: M- 780 W- 610 CR- 560
he takes them again in a month.

right now we are looking at RPI, WPI, U of Rochester, Syracuse, Lehigh, Lafayette and UVM. Any comments on the appropriateness of these schools, or suggestions on additional "safe" schools?

How about your local state university? State universities are usually good in engineering and are very inexpensive compared to private schools. This becomes especially true if your son doesn't get any merit aid.

Georgia Tech?

Srsassoc, how about RIT?l It is a very good school and is more reasonably priced than that of Syracuse or RPI.

we are less concerned with the finances than my son finding a school where he is comfortable both academically and socially.

I forgot to mention above that we are also looking at Case Western, and U of MD>

SUNY Buffalo
U Mass Amherst
Boston U
U Pittsburgh
Tufts

I think U Rochester, RPI, and Lehigh are good matches for your son.

All good schools you mentioned. here are some more.

Stevens Institute of Tech
SUNY Stony Brook
NY Polytechnical

Does he definitely want a school in the northeast or is he willing to venture to other parts of the country?

How about Renssalear?

^^^ that's RPI.

How about Drexel, Colorado School of Mines, or OSU?

He will go anywhere, though he did not want to go to one of the giant universities.

anyone have any experience with UConn or Purdue?

hmm... im shocked nobody has mentioned penn state. and if youre going to consider lehigh and lafayette, bucknell should probably be on your initial list, too.

UMR is a fine engineering school in a beautiful part of Missouri with friendly people.

VA Tech, NC State, Clemson

Trinity
Swatmore
Bucknell
Lafayette
Lehigh
Union
Brown
