School Suggestions For My Junior Daughter

Why did UCSC come off the list for T1? I know 1 recent marine bio graduate from there who is employed. And another current marine bio kiddo there.

ciervo - thank you, we will looke into those suggestions.

YoHoYoHo - the various UC schools have not completely fallen off her list, but they are not in her focus at this time. It ebbs and flows.

I wanted to take a moment to update this thread, as we are nearing the completion of our daughters’ college searches. To recount, our oldest is in the second semester of his sophomore year at TCU, majoring in Economics with a minor in Accounting. Our girls will be graduating high school this June and beginning college in the fall. Each of our girls has been accepted to a number of schools and is only waiting to hear from one more, respectively. Yes – we will have 3 in school concurrently for 2 years.

Our daughters consider themselves best friends. They are fraternal twins. And, up until several college visits this past fall, they had never spent a night apart. Yet, they have never given one moment’s thought to attending college together. (We know several sets of twins who are/will be attending college together – to each his own).

Our eldest daughter (by a minute) is generally concerned with the human condition. She is blessed with tremendous empathy, compassion and sensitivity. She is fiercely loyal to her friends. She loves animals. She was a cheerleader (a flyer) throughout high school, but will not be continuing this in college. She is interested in public service and social policy, as well as education and international development. She was looking for smaller schools that were generally in the DC to Boston corridor.

At this point her list has been narrowed to St. Joseph’s University, Catholic University, Providence, Loyola Maryland, and American University (assuming she is accepted this month).

Our youngest daughter is generally concerned with our planet and the environment. She puts everybody’s needs ahead of her own. She is a natural leader. She is independent. She loves animals. She swam (captain of the team her senior year), played soccer and ran track. She will not pursue sports competitively in college. She is scuba certified. She is interested in marine science/environmental science. She was looking at larger, mostly public, schools, and set no geographical limits on herself.

At this point her list has been narrowed to University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland – CP, University of Vermont, University of Miami, College of Charleston and Boston University (assuming she is accepted this month).

We have a number of visits scheduled in the weeks ahead. It has been a whirlwind keeping track of everything. My wife and I very much appreciate all of you who have reached out publicly and privately. This site has provided a wealth of information. I will update this thread as our daughters make their final decisions.

Congratulations to your daughters. Lots of good choices there.

@wisteria100 - Thanks.

I second the suggestion to look at U of Delaware for marine biology. Someone mentioned it a few pages back. I know a few students from our area (about 300 miles from Delaware) who ended up there for the same major.

@VMT - thanks for the suggestion. My daughter did consider UDel, but it did not make her short list, for no particular reason. We know a good number of students who have gone/are going to UDel and the school gets very high marks from the kids we know there and their parents. There are a lot of UDel success stories in my town.

The thread’s title is a bit misleading now, as it was begun over a year ago. My daughters are now seniors with short, finalized college lists. I thought it would make more sense to update this thread rather than beginning a new one.

Oops. Didn’t notice the dates.

Not a problem.

@Themclos I hope your daughter enjoys a trip to CofC Honors. It truly is an impressive program with very supportive faculty and peers . Truly a hidden gem.

@carolinamom2boys Thanks. Yes, it is the acceptance to the honors program that has elevated Charleston into the final list. My wife and I were impressed with Charleston during a visit with our son 2 years ago. And who wouldn’t love the city?!

keep us updated, I’d love to know how it all turns out!

@Trisherella - You and me both! Will do.
