We are looking for more schools to visit or consider for my DD class of 2020.
She is interest in business majors, maybe finance or accounting. She’s also very service oriented and has good leadership. Attends large public school, weighted GPA 4.5 before junior year. SAT 1450, plans to take once more to try to raise the reading.
So far she likes Cornell, Northeastern, Penn State and American. She hasn’t liked any very small schools. She would like some campus feel.
We are going to tour some additional schools over spring break so I’m looking for any suggestions we might not have thought of. I’m thinking possibly UVA and William and Mary?
Any suggestions welcome! We are not concerned with cost, just looking for a few more that are a good fit. Also, I think American and Penn State are pretty safe for her, so I’m looking for some match type schools. Thanks!
Cornell–Dyson only admits about three (3%) percent of all applicants.
University of Virginia–McIntyre & Indiana University–Kelley.
State of residence ? Geographical parameters ?
Major area of interest: Accounting, Finance, Insurance/Risk Management, International Business, Management, MIS, Marketing, Supply Chain/Logistics, Real Estate, Operations Management, etc. ?
A word of caution about considering American a safety: they admit a very high % of the ED pool, making the RD round quite competitive, and have a reputation (this is backed up by my daughter’s naviance) of rejecting higher-stats students who they don’t expect to actually attend - ie those who regard it as a safety.
Are you only looking at east coast schools? Emory? Fordham will probably be a match. Did she look at other Boston schools apart from northeastern?
If you go to UNC (big reach for OOS). also visit Wake Forest (about 90 minutes away). Excellent business school, great campus, etc. All the schools mentioned are quite competitive. I think you’d be a match for Wake.
What is the unweighted GPA? Out of state admissions are very difficult at UVA and UNC. Your school’s naviance should show where she is likely to be admitted. Pitt might be a good fit.
William and Mary is a terrific school, but more liberal arts rather than business.
Is there a specific geographic location or is she/ you open to anywhere?
U Rochester, Emory, Wake Forest, Lehigh? If she open to Catholic schools - BC, Villanova, SCU (in particular, if she is service-oriented, she might be interested in Jesuit schools like BC, SCU).
W&M not only has a UG business school, it has an EXCELLENT one with great placements in accounting, consulting, etc. Top notch program especially if you want to work in the DC area.
I have a couple of suggestions based on where my own children attended.
Georgia Tech. They have an excellent business school and GT’s motto is service and progress. Have your DD look at a program there called Grand Challenges. My DD who just graduated last month did it all four years and loved it. Also there is another program called something like “Dennings Management and Techonolgy” that might interest you DD. Georgia Tech gives a student the typical college experience with lots of leadership opportunities. Atlanta is very vivbrant and with Tech Square your DD will have no problem getting internships.
Ohio State and the Fischer School of business. My DS went to OSU and loved it. Fisher has very good reputation. Have your DD look at the Honors and Scholars programs.
I second SMU. The Cox School of Business is very good and Dallas provides a lot of opportunities. My best friend’s DD graduated from there 4 years ago and loved it. She has a great job now.
Make sure your DD applies EA to the above schools since chances areucj better and merit is awarded in the early rounds.
I don’t know is someone mentioned it earliwr, but be sure to find out if the college admits directly to the business school or if a student has to apply. I know GT and SMU are direct admits and I think OSU does some direct admits in the freshmen class. Some colleges require a student to apply separately to the business school and I have had students get into the college, but not the business school.
DePaul university in Chicago could be a nice safety for your D - good business school and well-respected in the Chicago business community, with great internship possibilities. Your D might qualify for significant merit money.
Thanks to all who responded! I will look over the suggestions with her.
To answer some of the questions I saw, we are in NJ. She is still deciding if she wants to be close (like between Boston and DC) or if she would be ok needing to fly. There are so many schools nearish that I hesitate to have her go too far unless she really wants to or there is a really great fit.
I know Cornell Dyson is a super reach and she knows that too. But for now that’s her favorite. We did visit American and I try to open their emails, etc so it shows interest. She’ll go to see the rep if they come to our area or her school.
UVA and Michigan are tentatively on the list, but also both reaches. Is William and Mary too?
She doesn’t want to be in the “south” but I may encourage Emory if her SAT goes up a bit more. She didn’t like Tulane - too much emphasis on being in New Orleans.
In Boston we also saw Brandeis and BU. Brandeis was too liberal arts focused. BU was ok but we all liked Northeastern better. BU is a maybe for now.
