I'm in 10th grade, just found out that my family's going to be relocating, so applying to schools.

I just found out I have to start applying to schools and most schools I looked at have a Jan 15 application deadline. Does it seem a little rushed? Or is it doable? The main problem though, is most of my teachers don't seem to like me much. I was pretty close to this one teacher last year, but she moved to another state. In some classes I don't pay much attention and talk to friends (math usually) but in others I don't talk at all. When winter break ends I'm going to try to improve on my relationships with teachers... but I still don't think I'll be able to get really great recommendations.

What would be a good school I could look into?

I have a 4.0 unweighted, taking an AP class this year, in honors classes, president of French Club, JV tennis and in youth symphony orchestra (I've played the flute for 4 years). I haven't taken the SSAT, but I've taken the PSAT and scored around 90 percentile.

Thanks! Any advice at all would be really appreciated.

I am not an expert in the in the field of expediting applications with a month to go. A little late in the game but if there is a will there is a way. First off, do your parents support the idea? FYG, everyone has to be onboard. Will you require financial aid? Do you plan on repeating 10th? Acceptance to 11th grade is not easy and very limited. Check out boarding school review to help in narrowing the schools down. I think there are some that have a January 31st / February 1st deadline. Contact those schools, request the applications on line if available and start working on them. Suggest the generic forms if the schools accept. You’re going to need teacher recommendations, so smile and be nice when you return next week. Go on the internet and find out when and where the next SSAT is being taken and take it asap. These are just the first thoughts that race through my mind when and if you decide to pull this off but it is doable. Good luck.

you can spend more $ and take a flex test at a certified test center. Flex simply gives you different date and time options. You can find this info on the ssat site. Also consider a school or two with a rolling admissions. That will give you a little more time incase you cant complete all the Jan 15 apps.

My parents do support it but we definitely need financial aid. i’m still not sure about repeating 10th, wouldn’t repeating a year look bad when you start applying to colleges? I also went on boardingschool review, but the schools with a feburary/late january deadline don’t seem to be that good- I’m pretty competitive in academics and despite not paying much attention in school now I do enjoy it.

Do you know of any good schools with rolling admissions?

Would I have to take the SSAT if I took the PSAT earlier in the year?

send in the psat w/ your app. Call AO and confirm that your ssat will follow if also needed. 10th grade repeats do not hurt your chances in college. It is very common in BS.
Consider Blair in NJ, they have a feb deadline.

Some schools with deadlines also admit on a rolling basis after the deadline. Call around and ask. Yes, you’re considered after the rest, but it’s not like you’re out of the race because you didn’t make the deadline. Of course the later you’re entering the pipeline, the more that financial aid need will become a drag on the viability of your application.

Thanks maddog I’ll look into Blair. Right now I’m also looking at Miss Hall’s, Mercersburg, Solebury and Emma Willard. What do you guys think of those schools? I can’t find many threads on those schools…

Right now I’m trying to find schools with a lower selectivity rate and that would accept PSAT scores instead of SSAT. Still trying to decide about repeating 10th.

aurelie, emma willard, blair and mercersburg are fantastic schools they have great reputations here, especially blair (for being nurturing) and mercersburg for having merit scholarships

don’t know too much about miss halls, and i’ve never heard of solebury.
best of luck!

thanks! do you know what reputation mercersburg has? like its school emphasis, faculty, students, etc.? It’s probably my top choice right now.

anyone know about tabor? i can’t find an acceptance rate and it seems like a good school, near the ocean

also, would the schools im considering- mercersburg, miss halls, emma willard, NMH, blair and tabor be considered second tier or third tier schools?

tabor is a fantastic school! yeah, their campus is right on the ocean and they have a unique marine biology program there. in terms of prestige, i think it’s comparable to blair/NMH/williston.

i’m not sure what people classify as tiers, but i think mercersburg is like, solidly 2nd tier. not sure about the others :P
