school supplies and dorm supplies

I'm going to be graduating high school in 2015 and i was wondering what school supplies do you need for your classes and what items do you need for your dorm?? And please tell me what items for the dorm you don't need. Thnx

Why now?

I guess I should delete this post since no is responding
:expressionless:

Keep in mind that a Bed Bath and Beyond is going to try to sell you many things you may not need. See what your dorm provides…and you can always add more stuff later. I would say to start with less and then add more if necessary. For example, do you need a fold up chair? see if you would use it and then buy it.

Well, you can’t really delete a post…but I think people are not responding because it’s a bit early for you…wait until you have some acceptances in hand and your schools narrowed down…then people will respond and/or direct you to an existing thread that answers your question. It is very broad. If you want to just look over some lists, search here for topics like things to pack, what should I bring, etc…

I think it’s better to start with the bare minimum, and get things as you need them. A lot of people get way too much stuff because they think they’ll need it, and end up barely using a lot of it, if at all. Remember that you’re going to have to deal with all the stuff that you have over breaks and things like that. You’ll be carting it around for 4 years, and the less you have, the easier this will be.

There are some important things that you can assume you’ll need ahead of time. Bedding, obviously. Do the dorms at your school include a mini-fridge? There’s a good chance that you’ll want one for keeping drinks and leftovers and such.

Someone mentioned bedding and I’d like to add to be careful about that and to know for sure what type of bed your college has for your dorm before you get bedding! As an example, my school’s a little weird so for most of the dorms, the beds are extra-long twins, but in the dorm I’m moving into for my senior year, I now have to buy new bedding again because suddenly I’ll have a full-size bed instead.

This seems really early to be planning… Focus on highschool, you’ll have plenty of time to shop for dorm things once you’re done with senior year.

As for what to bring, there are hundreds of lists online, take a look at some of those. I assume you can judge what kinds of things you will/won’t need by now, use those lists of ideas and ignore anything that seems silly.

As for not-to-brings: Avoid anything big. TV, fridge, couch, other furniture, etc. you should either coordinate with your roommate, or wait til you get there to decide on. Dorm rooms tend to be pretty tiny, there might not be enough room for big things, especially not for 2 TVs. :P

Since the OP is a foster child, she is probably very concerned about having what she needs since she wont like ly have an adult buying these things for her.

OP…do you have a part-time job? If not, can you get one? If you can, save as much as you can so that you will have the funds to buy the basic things that you will need: sheets, pillow, blanket, towels, basic toiletries, warm/cold weather clothes/shoes, etc. If you dont already have a laptop, you may need to buy one.

I dont know if the things you have now are “yours” or do they belong to your foster parent(s). If they are yours, then you will take those things with you. You might want to get some clarification from your foster parents. Some of the things that you have were purchased with the funds provided by the gov’t so they should be considered yours. Your clothes are yours, but I dont know what else is considered to be “yours”.

This student’s concerns are different, so I understand why she is asking so early.

For classes:
-Scientific calculator for science courses
-Laptop (possible to use library/ computer lab computers, but I don’t recommend this as a permanent solution)
-Pencils
-Pens
-Post its if you want to take notes in your books but need to sell/ return them at the end of the year
-Binder
-loose leaf college ruled paper for note taking (notebooks also work although I’m not a big fan)
-If you have a smart phone, get a free graphing calculator app, free scanning app, and other apps that fit your needs
-Backpack

For dorms:
-Pillow
-Sheets
-Mattress pad
-Comforter
-Weather appropriate clothing (going to school in FL? A snow jacket probably isn’t needed. Going to school in North Dakota? Yea it definitely is.)
-Potential interview attire
-Toiletries - brush/ comb, shampoo, soap, razors, toothbrush, tooth paste, deodorant, tampons/pads (assuming you’re female)
-Towel
-Bag to store laundry in
-Screwdriver
-Duct/masking tape
-Bag or suitcase for your clothes

IMO those are the only things you’ll really need for college. You can find around half of the items at the dollar store, and most of the rest at Walmart, thrift stores, or online. I would also recommend a bike if you go to a huge school where the weather is amenable to biking (invest in a good U lock).
