school supplies

have some ?s about school supplies before i go shopping for them. how are prices of school supplies at UCLA store compare to ones of other places such as target, etc?

do i need to buy them now before they run out, since we start really late compared to most schools?

here are my fall classes:
GE Cluster: Los Angeles, Math 3A (kucherenko), English Comp 3 (Westbay)

questions about specific supply:
1. notebooks: ideal no. of pgs and how many? one per class? what kind (divided, perhaps)?
2. loose leaf paper? how much?
3. do any teachers, particularly english teachers, hesitate when students turn in work teared from a notebook because of the fringes?

The UCLA store is generally overpriced... well they have normal prices for items but you're more likely to find better deals at places like Target etc where you might buy the items in bulk.

School supplies... don't worry about this too much. Its not like before where your teachers are anal about your having 3 notebooks, 5 folders, 3 sets of dividers, and a highlighter for every day of the week. Just gotta figure out what works for you - laptop for North Campus classes? Graph paper, notebook, or loose-leaf for math/science? Write in the course-reader? Yadadada... Seriously. The only times your materials are absolutely important in regards to the course is around exam-time when you need to have black and blue pens, a calculator, and an eraser/pencil. For the rest - its whatever you want. And well, you don't need everything immediately. My school supplies (North Campus major):

Laptop

Black and blue pens, and some bright ones

Marble comp. book + some normal notebooks

other than that... i have nothing. i have a couple of calculators + some other random notebooks.... when i had more science-y quarters but yeah that's about it really!

Irrelevant. Anything you turn in is going to be typed (north campus classes). South campus - they usually don't make you turn in homework and well no one cares from my exp.

Typical grading system for so. campus class: 2 midterms + 1 final exam.
north campus: midterm = 40%. final exam = 50%. 10% = homework/participation

some of the GEs might be like: 25% midterm. 5% participation. 15% final paper. rest = final exam

In general, from your other posts, I think you are worrying too much dawritingmachine.

If your laptop is heavy, or you know, existing, you may not want to bring it to class, because what a pain. (And for me personally my batery never lasts more than an hour and a half anyways).

Often you'll use notebooks. It's all up to you. However, if you are a girl, I highly recommend composition books. They are smaller and therefore fit really well in all of my purses and bags. Plus you don't have those annoying poking wires.

Depending on the class and how well you take notes, you may only use a third of the notebook. I reuse them for similar subject classes (I have one for all my film classes).

You will probably never use binder paper if you are north campus. Oh and I do recommend at least one folder/binder (I prefer a folder) for taking your papers to class, since you don't want them getting messed up in your bag.

Things you will need
-stapler
-pens
-a highlighter...haha if you do reading
-printer paper

I basically never touched the rest of my school supplies, but I'm paranoid and like having them anyways.

Hope that helps.

Are you really Emmeline? hmm..

Yes, dawritingmachine is worrying about it too much. Just gotta go with the flow.

I think price is gonna be a non-issue. I mean, you need so little core supplies that it'll only mean a difference of a couple bucks. Basically, you just need whatever that you can take notes with. Loose leaf would be nice for some math/science type homework. I guess they wouldn't care about the tearing, but it's courtesy I guess. And I'd personaly would hate to deal with little bits of paper anyways. So perforated notebooks would be solve the problem as well.

Yeah... what's that supposed to mean? ucapp <

yeah just to let u know, i'll be beginning the pre-med track plus phy sci and i'm planning for english minor. so if some1 asks if im a north or south campuser, what do i say??

thanks! and yes i am a girl. do girls wear backpacks or is that uncool?? i have big purses and backpack..which should i use? switch off perhaps?

North Campus.

Bring whatever is comfortable. Who cares what they think?

You say, "Suck my dick. What's it matter to you?"

A Hefty garbage bag.

You tell them your "pre-med track plus phy sci and i'm planning for english minor" phrase, and most likely, your responses will be "wow", "oh", or "thats cool". Don't ask the forum how to respond to that.

I don't know. I have the same question. I plan to wear a fanny pack to class, and I have a hot backpack too. Should I switch off those two??

I misread your post. Say "Phy Sci"/SoCampus. Just about every phy sci major is pre-med. And, well, your phy sci requirements overlap almost completely with the pre-med req. As for the English minor - really, you're coming in as a freshman. You haven't taken any classes yet and you're already thinking about the minor? I remember your posting that you don't like classical literature but would rather you it to bounce into journalism...

BoelterHall - I think a fanny pack would look cuter on you than a hot backpack... it'd complement your body, really. Hot.

do you think i should keep my math 3a materials for math 3b and 3c? or just take them home/recycle?

what about english comp 3 stuff? would it help to keep the materials for english 4w (and possibly beyond)?

i keep practically all my materials, a bit of the quarter will be a slight review.

You'll have everything you need for English 4W - enough books to keep you busy. Even then, you might not even take English 4W and might take two different Writing II classes.

Just keep all of your materials anyway. You're going to use Neuhauser again for 3B and 3C; you might as well just remember what you did on your previous problem sets.

The term Phy Sci is so ambiguous sometimes; Physical Science, or Physiological Science. LOL.

mme-lin, I can't stand marbled comp books. I always run out of pages or have a bunch left in them, and I can't just rip them out to use as normal paper like I can with a spiral notebook.

Boelter, fanny packs are making a come-back.
